Anti-parent Bill Withdrawn From Hearing

As a result of the overwhelming response from the parents and home school community of Texas, Sen. Royce West has pulled SB 1148 from consideration at the hearing of the Senate Jurisprudence Committee this afternoon. This means that testimony will not be taken on this bill today. THSC will, however, move forward with a press conference highlighting several families who have been devastated by lawsuits brought by grandparents.

Last session, as we attempted to respond to the continuing lawsuit abuse of single parents by vindictive in-laws, we sought to address the concerns of the Texas Family Law Foundation (TFLF), which represents the interests of the family law attorneys in Texas. TFLF refused to acknowledge in any way the problem these fit parents face and refused to support any changes to the grandparent access statute.

As late as last week TFLF told House and Senate sponsors of the Texas Parental Rights Restoration Act (HB 2547 and SB 1194) that TFLR would oppose these bills and that there were no changes that would enable them to support those bills.

Yesterday the lobbyist for TFLF approached me in the Capitol and told me that he would like to “work together to address our concerns about SB 1148.” This is a 180-degree change in direction by TFLF and is the direct result of the outpouring of opposition to SB 1148 that would dramatically undermine parental rights in Texas and result in an increase in lawsuits against fit parents.

Thank you for your response, and please continue to pray for us as we seek a legislative response to the family law lawsuit abuse against fit parents.
