“Home school freedoms are at risk every time the legislature meets,” says THSC President Tim Lambert on a regular basis. For this reason, two years ago THSC implemented the Watchmen program to protect Texas families. Policy Director Jeremy Newman has stated on several occasions, “Killing bad legislation is the number one objective of the Watchmen.”
The beginning of March presented several occasions for the Watchmen to meet their number one objective. Different members of the Watchmen team testified against bills and other legislation that they believed violated parental rights. Currently, two bills attacking your freedom are expected to fail thanks, in part, to the testimonies of the Watchmen representing your families.
Two Amendments Threatening Parental Rights:
In addition to those bills, two amendments to the budget were presented to the Texas House of Representatives in an attempt to pass legislation that could have been harmful to parental rights. The Watchmen recognized these threats and took the appropriate actions on the following amendments:
- The first amendment, authored by Rep. Mary Gonzalez, would have allowed minors still under the legal authority of their parents to obtain contraceptives without the knowledge or approval of their parents. This would have also included non-abortive, surgical birth control methods. THSC believes that allowing minors to purchase these contraceptives without the consent of their parents would undermine parental authority.
- The second amendment, authored by Rep. Abel Herrero, would have cut state funding for legislation concerning school choice. THSC believes that parents should have the authority to choose the best possible education route for their children. THSC has supported Sen. Donna Campbell and several others trying to implement school choice in the state of Texas.
Fortunately, with the help of family-friendly legislators, both of these amendments were killed during the budget debate.
THSC is not only interested in increasing the freedoms of home school families in Texas, but also protecting the freedoms that they currently have. This is why the Watchmen will continue to keep a close eye on the legislation presented during the 84th Texas Legislature.
