For the home school community at large, this blatant attempt to overthrow the most basic aspect of human identity represents an unprecedented moral collapse in our society. How in the world did we end up here?
Although the Dallas City Council has struck up the monologue that this anti-discrimination ordinance has been in effect for years, multiple sources point out that the principal difference in the former ordinance is the inclusion of one’s “perceived” sexual orientation as a protected class. The council redefined the generally accepted definition of a man or a woman and made it law without proper input from the people it impacts.
Essentially, we now protect against transgender discrimination by discriminating against all American women, who no longer have a basic right to privacy and safety in the public square. We sacrificed the protection of one group of people (incidentally, about half the population) to protect another group of people.
Under this change, Dallas business owners will be required to allow men into women’s bathrooms or face a fine. In a recent interview Jonathan Saenz, President of Texas Values, explained how there are already examples of registered sex offenders walking into women’s bathrooms under other similar laws.
This decision by the Dallas City Council, as well as the recent attempt in Houston to accomplish essentially the same thing, demonstrates exactly how far we have fallen. Equality has now become a battle cry for some of the most unequal social philosophies ever devised.
Although the left propagates a regular mantra about Republican’s “War on Women,” it is the left that is now telling women that the only prerequisite for being a women is your desire to be one. Additionally, ordinances like the one passed by the Dallas City Council present an undeniable, tangible threat to women that is apparently justified in the name of “equality.”
In fact, as Glamor Magazine demonstrated when it recognized Bruce Jenner with its award for Woman of the Year, we now stretch the concept of equality to such unequal proportions that denying our own biological reality is award worthy. It is hard to imagine something more anti-women than telling women all across the world that men now make better women than women do.
The necessary question that arises out of times such as these is how should Christians respond? How do we balance a lifestyle of love and acceptance with a controversial and frequently offensive stand for the truth?
It is important to remember that this battle is not a public policy debate at its root. This is a debate about basic moral principles. Therefore, there is a line that must be drawn between unapologetically defending the truth and demagoguing the opposition through personal attacks or imputed motivations.
The facts demonstrate the truth clearly enough to anyone willing to listen. Our fight is now at a much deeper level. This is a battle for the heart and soul of American principles. The only way to win a war on principles is to recognize where we find truth.
It is time for Texans to second guess the practice of watching politics and public policy from afar and to renew the debate on moral relativism by participating in the conversation at every level of government.
