In July, over 80 leaders crowded into the 2016 South Texas Leader’s Conference held at The Woodlands, Texas to enjoy informative workshops and see Ely Butuyan of LIGHT Katy Co-op selected as the 2016 South Texas Leader of the Year! It was exciting that she had been selected, because having met her, it was easy to see what an impact she has in Katy, Texas.
I asked Ely to share her story and I know you will enjoy reading it as much as I did!
I’m married to my best friend, Bradley. This Thanksgiving will be our 17th anniversary. We have been entrusted with 3 young hearts, Caleb, 13, Noah, 11, and Sarah, 7. We are also blessed with having my dear niece, Enid, live with us the past few years. Because we’ve always home schooled, it’s hard to say when we started, but counting from Grade K, this is our 9th year. I currently serve as president of LIGHT Katy Co-op. My main roles are to cast the vision and goals of our group with all members, preside over our dedicated Leadership Team meetings, and oversee our wonderful event coordinators. Our co-op is only 4 years old and I’m amazed at what the Lord has done! We have grown from a small group of 10 families who got together to support each other in our home schooling efforts to around 80 families who are part of our social membership where we offer a variety of educational, social and community service opportunities. In addition, 34 families are part of our Enrichment Program that meets weekly for parent-led, affordable classes.
My favorite part of leading LIGHT is to see new friendships grow. Moms are becoming dear friends, and so are the children. Because we are a parent-led cooperative, there are many opportunities for families to share their gifts with one another and to foster deep relationships. Our co-op’s verse is Philippians 2:15 “that you may be blameless, innocent, children of God without blemish, in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” I love seeing our families shine brightly and bring glory to our heavenly Father as they serve one another and our community. This is truly a team effort! Everyone plays an important part in LIGHT. There are so many challenges and pressures for home schooling families, and it is so easy to lose heart if you do not have a good support system around you. I want families that join our co-op to thrive in their home schooling journey. It brings me so much joy to know that our group plays a role in encouraging these families to persevere in laboring for their children and in waiting for the harvest to come.
My hope is that Ely’s impact on Texas home school families will serve as encouragement to those of you that are leaders across our state as you build up home school families.
