“Is Genesis History?” from Compass Cinema and Fathom Events comes to movie theaters nationwide for a one-night event, Thursday, Feb. 23, 2017. In the documentary hosted by Dr. Del Tackett, former president of the Focus on the Family Institute and creator of Focus on the Family’s The Truth Project, renowned scientists and Bible scholars explore evidence for historic interpretations of the Book of Genesis.
THSC visited with Dr. Tackett about what he hopes to accomplish with this film.
Who are you trying to reach with this movie?
I want to speak to people open to evidence that the Bible has accurately recorded the beginning of everything. I think anyone confronted with the paradigm that says everything came from random processes needs to see the evidence we present. That evidence is not shown in academia. The current paradigm is the only one allowed. The evidence here won’t be allowed in any mainstream institutions. We want to present that evidence to those who have an open ear to hear.
Tell us about the team that made the movie—what sort of academic and career backgrounds do they have?
The scientists are well-credentialed with doctorates and have been doing research in the field. Kurt Wise, for example, has a Ph.D. in paleontology from Harvard. You can look at all of their credentials at IsGenesisHistory.com.
What would you say to those who believe in Jesus and the Bible, but also believe the creation story is a metaphor rather than a scientific explanation?
I would argue that to make a scientific explanation of a miraculous event is impossible. If you use current scientific rules, there can never be an explanation that includes miraculous or external supernatural forces. It is a logical fallacy to presuppose that something cannot be historically accurate if it doesn’t provide a naturalistic scientific explanation.
Dr. Steve Boyd, a highly renown Hebrew scholar, stated that no one can come to the Genesis text and interpret it in any other genre except historical narrative … The Hebrew text does not support a metaphoric, allegorical or poetic interpretation.
Is a person’s belief about the earth’s beginnings a type of litmus test of genuine Christian faith?
I would say that if you interpret Genesis as anything other than historical narrative, you will soon have major problems with the rest of Scripture and with your biblical worldview. These are finite things. The Word of God should never be twisted or distorted into a form that is more pleasant for us. All scientific paradigms will come and go. The Word of God is eternal and sure. Begin there.
What do you hope viewers take away from this movie?
If they came in believing that the Genesis account is historically accurate, I hope they leave with increased confidence in God’s Word. The scientists that we interviewed are extremely intelligent and professional in their work.
For those who were on the fence or hold a strong contrary view, I hope they will see evidence that should be part of an open, honest dialogue. It doesn’t benefit the science community to shut out contrary views simply because they don’t hold to a naturalistic or materialistic worldview.
