Finding a Local Support Group
THSC encourages all home schooling families to join a local support group. Home school support groups are made up of family units which teach their children at home. Local groups differ in many ways but are usually designed to provide various activities for home schooling families such as, but not limited to, the following:
Field trips Spelling bees Programs Scouting activities Curricula reviews Group newsletter Choirs and bands Science classes/clubs Teacher meetings Geography bees Art classes Park days Skating/bowling days Coop classes Reading/drama clubs Fair days
Some support groups are very organized, complete with bylaws and elected leaders. Others are simply family gatherings in the park or church. Like people, support groups have personalities because they are made up of people. You are free to join as many groups as you want, and it is always a good idea to ask questions to become informed about the group before you join. Your decision about which group to join will be easier if you have questions prepared to ask the groups contact person when you call.
Pertinent questions may include:
What are the yearly dues and what do the dues cover?
How often does the group meet?
How large is the group?
What activities do they offer?
How long has the group been in existence?
What type of group is it?
(1) exclusively Christian
(2) inclusive group with exception of officers and board members
(3) inclusive group where anyone of any faith or belief may join and hold office
If you cannot find a support group near you or decide to start one of your own, contact THSC for information. THSC can provide materials that might be of some assistance to you.
In addition to local support groups, there are home school organizations that serve large geographical regions of the state. If you live in one of the regions served by one of these groups, contact that group for information about home schooling activities in the area and for help in connecting with a support group close to you.
