A Report on the First 2007 Capitol
Day
By Cassandra Phillips
As an
eight-year veteran of Capitol Days, I always get excited when
Capitol Days roll around again. This year is particularly exciting
for me, as I am now helping to run the event, rather than just
participating in it. Seeing all of the young, eager, if maybe a
bit apprehensive, faces coming in the door, full of curiosity and
anticipation, fills me with excitement for what we can accomplish
in this legislative session.
On February 6
about a hundred home school kids and parents were sitting in a
beautiful church in Austin, listening to Rep. Charlie Howard
conveying how important it is for home school families to be
involved in state government and what an incredible difference we
can make and have already made. Rep. Howard proceeded to brief
attendees on the mandate concerning HPV vaccination. His honest
and informed report was helpful to all.
Following the
representative came Matt Creel, a staffer from Rep. Carl Isett’s
office, to give us a glimpse of what it is like in a legislator’s
office. After a briefing on HB169 and SB52 (about which the
students would lobby in the afternoon) concerning the mandatory
kindergarten attendance age, and some role-playing by the kids,
everyone dismissed to go to lunch and then to head to the State
Capitol!
This elite
group of citizen lobbyists visited every legislator’s office in
the Capitol, graciously informing them about an issue of concern,
while giving them glimpses (sometimes their first) of real, live
home school students.
Needless to
say, all of this activity made for a very exciting day at the
Texas State Capitol and a great experience for everyone involved.
What an incredible way to be involved in state government and to
learn how it works at the same time!

an intern, helping with the lobbying efforts of THSC Association
during the current legislative session.
