Home Schooling: Why & How ~
Voddie Baucham
“A
disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully
trained will be like his teacher.” (Luke 6:40) It is impossible to
separate education from discipleship. Whomever we allow to educate
our children will inevitably be their primary discipler. This is
not only true of our choice to homeschool. It is also true of our
choice of curriculum, philosophy, and goals. In this session, we
will examine what the Bible has to say about the training of the
mind and explore ways to choose education over schooling.
Ready, Set … Now What Do I Do? ~
Tim & Lyndsay Lambert
Where
do I get curriculum? Do I have to make bulletin boards? How do I
teach several grades at once? Do I need to have lesson plans and
give grades? Do I need a lawyer? What about socialization? Exactly
what is the law in Texas concerning home schooling? Tim and
Lyndsay Lambert answer these questions and more as they give
advice to new home schoolers.
8:00 p.m.
Heartbeats of Discipleship: Shaping the Heart of Your WholeHearted
Child ~Sally
Clarkson
At
its heart, true Christian home education is biblical discipleship.
Your goal should be not only to raise a well-educated child
but even more to grow a wholehearted one. Sally will discuss the
biblical commitments parents must make to reach and shape the
hearts of their children for Christ.
Which Way Do I Go? ~
Mary James
Reduce your Exhibit Hall frustration by learning about the most
popular methodologies (textbooks, living books, unit studies, and
classical) and gaining a close-up look at the conference
exhibitors. Which ones have which methodologies? Which methodology
is best for your home school? You’ll be glad you stopped here
first!!

Multi-Generational Vision ~
Voddie Baucham
Home
education is about more than just improving SAT scores. We are
actually preparing our children to impact the next generation.
Therefore, it is very important that we understand the biblical
concept of living and serving multi-generationally. We must begin
to think and act like what we do with our children today will
impact our children’s children tomorrow.
How to Write Goals & Objectives ~
Jim Stobaugh
The
maxim, “If one is aiming for nothing, one always reaches it!” is a
true statement. This very practical workshop will teach parents
how to articulate and to evaluate quantifiable cognitive,
behavioral, and affective (i.e., spiritual) goals. Participants
will have access to many helpful handouts, including goals and
objectives from all the core subjects.
Media Choices: Convictions or Compromise? ~
Phillip Telfer
Today's entertainment has become one of the biggest stumbling
blocks of spiritual growth and family health in this generation.
It is possibly one of the most neglected subjects to be
addressed from a biblical worldview in homes and churches. For the
first time in the history of the world, we have a generation that
is faced with the overwhelming challenge of living in an
electronic age with new conduits of temptation and time wasting.
In this multimedia presentation you will learn ten biblical
principles that will help you safely guide your children past the
spiritual roadblocks of today’s entertainment.
10:45 a.m.
Home Schooling With Your Whole Heart: Twelve Commitments of
WholeHearted Learning ~ Sally Clarkson
Sally
shows how turn home schooling into a living and learning
lifestyle. She discusses twelve commitments of the WholeHearted
Learning model, including seeing your child through God’s eyes,
"whole book" learning methods, fine arts studies, creative
writing, using "discovery corners," and much more.
Home Schooling in the Real World ~ David Hazell
Do
you have other responsibilities beyond home schooling? Do you have
trouble balancing cooking, cleaning, family life, social life,
finances, and home schooling? The “real world” often interferes
with our concept of an “ideal” home school. We, however, must
educate our children in the “real world.” The key to finding the
balance may begin by reevaluating our philosophy of home
education.
Thrills, Chills & Spills: Adventures in Parenting a Child with
Special Needs~ Doug & Patsy Arnold
"Step right up folks.
Get your tickets here for the ride of your lifetime. See the
attractions! Ride the rides!" Join us on a stroll through an
amusement park in this encouraging workshop that is full of
analogies. Along the way Doug and Patsy will share stories about
the joys and trials that can come with raising your
anything-but-typical child.
11:45 a.m. – Lunch & Shopping
1:45 p.m.
Harvard or Heaven? For What Are We Preparing Our Children? ~
Voddie Baucham
Many
home educators endure the hardships of raising, training, and
discipling their children all the way through high school only to
send them to pagan universities to be devoured. Moreover, the
price tag for the privilege is staggering. Do we really need to
send every kid to college? Do we really need to spend four years
and $80,000 to $100,000 for a bachelor’s degree that in most
instances is not worth the paper it's printed on? In this session
we will examine the Great
College Con and
re-examine the way we pursue advanced education for those of our
children who actually need it.
But We Had Hoped … The Home Schooled Prodigal ~
Karen Stobaugh
We
all like the happy stories, but what about the stories that do not
have happy endings? After faithfully homeschooling all of our
children's lives, what if all our best efforts seem to fail? What
if our child chooses not to walk with God? We will look at the
life of Absalom and the story of the Prodigal Son, share stories,
and encourage one another. As Karen shares their struggles with
their oldest daughter, she will invite honest sharing and honest
questions.
Homeschooling Math Without a Plan? You’ve Got to Be Kidding! ~
Tom Clark
This
workshop is designed to help parent-educators understand the
scope, the sequence, and the logic of mathematics instruction from
preschool through adulthood. Join Tom Clark, founder of VideoText
Interactive and author of Algebra: A Complete Course and Geometry:
A Complete Course, as he takes you on a sometimes humorous
journey, describing all levels of arithmetic and all mathematics
courses encountered in high school and college. In addition,
considerable attention will be given to identifying the “why” of
the study of mathematics, with an emphasis on the development of
concepts instead of rote memorization.
3:00 p.m.
Enduring to the End … of the Day ~
Sally Clarkson
Sally
offers biblical wisdom and practical insight from a veteran home
schooling mother of four about how to keep going even when you
feel like you can’t keep up. She draws on biblical precepts and
principles she has learned in more than twenty years of home
schooling, encouraging mothers how to persevere and finish well.
Learning Styles ~
Mary James
Do
you ever wonder why you cannot get a certain concept across to a
particular child? Do you know what that child’s learning style is?
What is your teaching style? This workshop uses Cathy Duffy’s
learning style model to help parents make better choices when
educating their children.
Writing as a Christian Vocation ~
John Erickson
In
this workshop, John will talk about the process of writing and
what it means to be a Christian writer. He will discuss how we
must always keep in mind that our worldview is not the same as the
secular worldview of popular culture. We begin from a different
premise (We are made by God, in the image of God.) That leads to
different conclusions (Our lives are not meaningless, and neither
is our art.) Christian writing is not "Christian" simply because
we repeat "faith words," and we should attempt to reach the
audience that doesn't belong to a church.
4:15 p.m.
Walking by Faith to Help Your Child Find a Godly Spouse
~ Tim Lambert
In
this day of a fifty percent divorce rate and rampant promiscuity,
how involved should parents be in protecting their children? How
does one go about finding a godly spouse? Is encouraging your
young people to hang out in church singles groups enough?
Our culture says dating is fine; some say courtship is the answer;
others are committed to betrothal. Tim Lambert gives an honest
presentation about the misconceptions and the actualities of
different approaches. He explains how the process should be an act
of trusting the Lord and adapting to your family, while working to
protect your children from sin, helping them find God’s best, and
honoring Him in the process.
The Terrible Twos: Preparing Toddlers for Adolescence
~ Lyndsay Lambert
Must
the teen years be full of rebellion and turmoil? How you deal with
your young child will have a definite impact on the kind of
teenager with which you will have to deal. There is hope when we
follow biblical principles and lay a solid foundation.
When Our Memory Fades ~
Karen Stobaugh
Perhaps no cognitive act exemplifies the wonder of God's creation
more than the act of spelling. This workshop looks both at
spelling and spelling rules and also examines the physical aspects
of spelling. Mrs. Stobaugh, a learning disability therapist, shows
parents and teachers how to make spelling a thought, rather than
merely a memorization, process. Mrs. Stobaugh also answers such
questions as, "Why do some very bright students spell poorly? What
can we do to improve their spelling skills?"

John and Kris Erickson as they take you into the world of Hank
the Cowdog, singing the songs and telling the stories you’ve
long enjoyed in the books. Get to know Hank’s “family” as the
Ericksons also share from their life experiences of homeschooling
their own children, creating Hank stories, and, yes, living out on
a ranch.

What He Must Be ~
Voddie Baucham
One
of the frequently overlooked byproducts of government education is
the advancement of feminist ideology and its implications for
family life. In this workshop we will examine the influence of
feminist ideology and secular humanism as they relate to biblical
manhood/womanhood and the family. We will then address strategies
to overcome these ideologies in the way we educate our sons and
daughters, particularly in the way we prepare them for marriage
and family.
Designing a High School Program ~
Jim Stobaugh
For
such a time as this every moment counts. With so many
opportunities available, we need to be very wise in our designing
of a high school curriculum track. The problem is not that there
is a paucity of choices but that there is a plethora of good
choices! After the convention, via e-mail, Pastor Stobaugh will
provide a sample transcript.
Building Readiness Skills ~
Mary James
The two
Rs of teaching
preschoolers are readiness and relationship.
What activities are important during these formative years? How do
you capture your child's heart and instill in them a love of
learning that will carry them through their school years? Gain
insight and inspiration from a home schooling mother of eight.
10:45 a.m.
The Mom Walk: Keeping in Step with God on the Journey of Motherhood ~
Sally Clarkson (Moms Only)
Sally
encourages Christian mothers how to walk with God on the “path” of
life with Purpose, Assurance, Trust, and Heart. For Christian and
home schooling mothers, the path to joy and fruitfulness at home
is walking with God and worshipping Him. Sally shares out of her
thirty-plus years in ministry and motherhood.
Working Dads Can Homeschool, Too! ~
David Hazell (Dads Only)
Busy
dads can be involved in school, too. Do we pressurize or
de-pressurize our wife’s already overloaded day? Redefining home
school as “family education” can be a great help. We can lead
devotions, institute a “Mom’s Day Off,” guide the slimy science
experiments, read books aloud, surf the Internet for solutions,
and much more. We are never “too busy” to provide emotional and
spiritual stability to our home. Come and hear from the
perspective of a busy dad who finds creative ways to help. Home
schooling is hectic but eternal. Keep the spark and stand with
your wife side-by-side.
Teaching Mathematics as a Language—What Gets Lost in the
Translation?~ Tom Clark
Did
you know that Mathematics has parts of speech and sentence
structure, just as does any spoken language? Did you know that
understanding the “grammar” of Mathematics greatly helps student
understanding of problem solving and applications? In this
workshop, Tom Clark, founder of VideoText Interactive and author
of Algebra: A
Complete Course and Geometry:
A Complete Course, clearly and humorously demonstrates this
quality of mathematical language. At last, you will truly
understand the roles of all types of mathematical symbols, and you
will see how easy it is to translate between Mathematics and
English, enabling you to improve your understanding–and
teaching–of “story problems” at all levels.
11:45 a.m. – Lunch & Shopping
1:45 p.m.
These Uncertain Times ~
Tim Lambert
With
the disturbing news coming daily out of Washington, D.C., and
concerns about threats to our freedoms at the state level as well,
what must we do? Tim will share his thoughts on some of the issues
of concern for Texas home schoolers and ways we can have an impact
and protect our children’s future.
The Terrible Teens: Dealing with Adolescents ~
Lyndsay Lambert
Will
home schooling make your teen “different”? Isn’t that the point?
Many problems with teens are associated with peer influences.
While home education is not a panacea, as we homeschool and strive
to raise our children to serve the Lord, we have the opportunity
to overcome some of the “normal” problems of adolescence.
Classical Teaching—But Is it? ~ Jim Stobaugh
“Classical Education” is a buzzword that almost no one knows how
to define. Dr. Stobaugh will define classical education and will
offer concrete ways to implement this vital educational program in
various subject areas. Workshop participants will hear Dr.
Stobaugh argue that “true” classical education is the best way to
prepare students to be critical thinkers.
2:45 p.m. – Special Fellowships; Coffee Break and Shopping

Getting Your House in Order ~
Voddie Baucham
The
modern American family is in a shambles. Divorce is rampant,
parent/child relationships are strained, and no one seems to have
any answers. Well, there are answers.
God has not left us to wander aimlessly in the dark. Deuteronomy 6
offers a poetic, practical, and timeless message to families
trying to figure out how to break the mold and live a God-honoring
family life.
