Teen Driver Safety - Round II
Home schoolers made themselves heard last week before and during a hearing at the House Public Education Committee. Calls were made to the committee in support of HB 339, and some testified at the hearing as well. As mentioned in Right In Texas last week, this bill is an effort to impact the high number of teen driver accidents in Texas.
... We will continue to monitor these bills to make sure that no effort to repeal or restrict parent-taught driver education becomes law. The commercial driving school lobby has filed bills in virtually every legislative session since 1995, seeking to eliminate or restrict parent-taught driver education, and they acknowledge publicly that the home school community of Texas has been responsible for thwarting their efforts. We plan to continue to do so with your help.

Amid Hard Times, Home Schoolers Persist
This article illustrates the determination of home schoolers to finish what they start. They may have to take evening jobs, switch the teaching from Mom to Dad, or accept help from their older children, as they fight to continue homeschooling through an economic downturn. Other parents are turning to home schooling when they can no longer afford private school tuition.

South Plains College Dual Credit Problem Resolved
After several letters and phone calls between THSC and South Plains College and a meeting between Tim Lambert and several officials of SPC, the school has agreed to work toward setting up dual credit classes for home school students at the discounted rates that public and other private school students receive. There are conditions home schoolers must meet, but they are comparable to the conditions required of other high school students.

Making a Difference Daily
A friend at church recently chided me for missing a ladies' retreat. In my defense I said, "I felt I just needed to be home this year and spend some time with my kids."
"Spend time with your kids!" she replied. "That's all you do is spend time with your kids."
Her answer stung a bit, but I did not struggle with my feelings for long. I knew my decision to stay home from the retreat was made carefully and prayerfully and that I had followed my heart. Each time we as parents choose to seek God's guidance and put our families first, we are making a difference in the lives of our children.
...
It would be nice to think that all home school children are gifted and talented, and a great many of them are, but many also fall into the category of "ordinary." Yet God used ordinary men and women all throughout history. He uses ordinary home school families now to achieve great things.
