Also, make your plans to attend the
Rally for Parental Rights!
Take advantage of this opportunity that only comes around every two years! Don't miss out on giving your children (and yourself!) the chance to participate in our state government! Families that attended the Capitol Day in March enjoyed a great hands-on experience, learned how a bill becomes a law, lobbied members of the legislature and impacted state policy. Read the testimonial of a family who attended the March Capitol Day.
The deadline for THSC Association's April 7 Capitol Day is March 31. There are only two Capitol Days left this year, so register for April 7 and May 6 while space is available!
NEW for 2009!
Besides having a new, more interactive format at Capitol Days, we have also produced a very helpful, 80-page, unit study, the Good Citizen Pack. Whether able to attend the Capitol Days or not, elementary through high school age students will gain a fuller understanding of government and the Texas legislature through the activities, projects, and reading in the Good Citizen Pack. Simply order yours using the Capitol Day Registration form or call the THSC office at our toll free order line: 888-200-4903.

Helpful Videos Make Home Schooling Easier
Home schooling doesn't have to be hard! THSC Association offers several videos to help you or someone you know on this home education journey.
If you are just getting started, take a look at Ready, Set ... Now What Do I Do? Tim and Lyndsay Lambert answer questions about where to get curricula, whether or not bulletin boards are necessary, how to teach several grade levels at once, and, "Is this LEGAL?!" You can take a deep breath and relax, as they guide your first steps on this exciting adventure.
Are your children teenagers? You may be interested in hearing about an alternative to dating. In Courtship - One Family's Perspective, Tim, Lyndsay, their son Peter, and his wife Rita share their experiences and ideas about this "new" way for young people to find spouses while keeping their purity intact.
For a historical perspective on home schooling, check out THSC's documentary Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom. Told by the participants themselves, it depicts the struggles that home schooling trailblazers endured during the 1980's and '90's. Their willingness to persevere led to our home schooling freedom today.

Judge Rips Homeschool Mom's Choice of Churches
Back in the news is the North Carolina judge who ruled that, regardless of the "good job" the mother had done in home schooling, her children must return to public school next fall. He has now cited the mother's choice of churches as one reason for his ruling. The judge allowed evidence from critics of the church, but almost no evidence from its supporters was included in the hearing.

Denison ISD Files Charges Against Parent
When Denison High School officials filed charges of "Parents contributing to non-attendance" against an Association member, he contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote the district, pointing out its mishandling of the case by refusing to disenroll the student until two weeks after receipt of a certified letter withdrawing the student. Lambert urged the district to withdraw the charges and change its policies to avoid legal action by THSC.

Can I Homeschool and Work, Too?
When I started teaching my children at home in 1993, it was rare for me to meet a home schooling mother who worked outside the home. We home educators met at our local park and commiserated on the challenges of tackling lesson plans and getting dinner on the table each night. Our husbands worked full-time, or more, to support the school lunch program, and we wives worked hard to stretch the income as far as possible. We swapped curriculum and clothes with each other, along with recipes designed to make the most use of the available items in our pantries.
Contrast the above scenario with 2007, when quite a few of my home educating friends and acquaintances work either from home or outside the home. While there are many families living on one income, increasing numbers of households are finding it more and more difficult to do so for a variety of reasons. When I counsel new home schoolers these days, many ask me if it is possible to work and homeschool.
