Serving Texas Home Schoolers for Over 20 Years
March 31, 2009
Say What?!!

texascapitol4Capitol Day attendees in March found out some interesting tidbits about THSC president, Tim Lambert, such as his actual birth state! Who knows what April attendees will learn?!

In addition, students will enjoy taking on the roles of House and Senate members in the morning as they practice passing a bill of their own to get their feet wet and learn the legislative process. After participating in the mock session, students will be able to put their newfound knowledge to use and will take the Capitol by storm lobbying real members of the legislature in support of pivotal pieces of legislation.

That afternoon, they will join many home school families at a rally in support of parental rights and hear the likes of Governor Perry, Tim Lambert, and home school friendly legislators.

Mark it on your calendar, register to come and join us on April 7!  Registration deadline: TODAY!!

Playing God with Home Schoolers
 Big News
In a tongue-in-cheek turnabout, Patrice Lewis of WorldNetDaily cleverly portrays what it must be like for a child to be forced to attend an unfamiliar school:  the peer pressure, the academic demands, and the incompatible worldview. Judges know best, though...don't they?

Fort Worth Branch of TDHHS Denies Services

tim06
In a continuation of a previously settled situation, the Ft. Worth branch of the Texas Department of Health and Human Services (TDHHS) persists in denying benefits to an Association member. The department has told the mother that she has not adequately proven that she is homeschooling. Over a year ago, Tim Lambert wrote a  letter to the department, pointing out the section in the Texas Works Handbook that instructs state departments to accept a parent's statement that a child is homeschooled. Again he urged the department to accept the parent's assurance and reconsider her case so that THSC would have no cause to take action.

Results: After receiving the letter, the Ft. Worth TDHHS office reinstated the Association member's benefits for the second time.

Why Am I Doing This?
Why Am I Doing This?

When I first made the decision to homeschool, my oldest son was eighteen months old. As he grew toward school age, I became more convinced that I had made the right decision. When asked at the time why I was going to homeschool, my pat answer was "... because of what the public schools are teaching and because of what they are not teaching." I felt that there was too much emphasis on humanistic viewpoints and not enough of the good ol' 3 R's. In sixteen years of homeschooling, my list of reasons has grown considerably, due in part to the changing climate of our society and in part to what I have learned from our own experience. Most of us who homeschool would list the same basic reasons for our choice. In examining these reasons, though, I begin to wonder if I really understand just why I am doing this.
