Capitol Day Resounding Success

CapDay_April09-TimThe April Capitol Day and the Parental Rights Rally were HUGE successes! Students and families enjoyed the Capitol Day training in the morning and impacted their government through lobbying after lunch. Also in the afternoon, a large crowd of home schoolers and supporters rallied for parental rights! Groundwork was laid for a successful hearing, which followed two days later, on key legislation, HB 2084. Governor Perry, Railroad Commissioner Michael Williams, and many other state officials joined Rally participants and spoke out in support of families and parental rights! (Click on the picture for a more in-depth report.)

Come to the May 6 Capitol Day - your last chance until 2011. Learn the process of government. Leave your mark on our government by propelling important bills toward law! Have a hand in making history by partnering with THSC to restore parental rights in Texas! The registration deadline is coming up on April 29, but space is limited, so sign up soon!

Home Schooler to Graduate from College Before High School
 Big News
As Neil Turner walks across the stage May 11 to receive his Associates of Arts Diploma from M State - Fergus Falls, he may just appear to be a typical college grad.

Like many in his situation, he's moving on to a new college next year, and is more than pleased to have a summer off to follow his favorite sports team: The Twins.

But despite all the similarities, there is one thing that separates Turner from the rest: He's 14 years old.

subtractionMy six-year-old daughter Savannah has always held a very black-and-white view of justice. She is very literal in her thinking. People don't make mistakes or forget to do something they promised; they lie. To her way of thinking you either mean what you say and say what you mean, or you lack integrity and honesty.

A few days ago I began teaching Savannah the concept of subtraction with borrowing. As I explained the concept she wore a doubtful expression upon her face. I noticed that as I demonstrated each equation her countenance became more clouded, she let forth heavy sighs, and her shoulders sagged. Finally, I asked her if she understood.... She replied, "Yes, I understand. But Mom," and she looked deeply into my eyes for the first time and said with quiet conviction, "you're lying."

THSC Provides Verification of Home Schooling for Robstown Family

In addition to letters that explain the state law as it pertains to home schooling, the Texas Home School Coalition Association also provides letters of verification when someone questions whether or not a family is really homeschooling. In this letter to a justice of the peace, Tim Lambert confirms the validity of a Robstown family's schooling.

To Attend or Not to Attend - That Is the Question

Ah, spring! Open the windows, send the kids outside to play, and plan an outdoor field trip; the zoo is nice this time of year. It seems too soon to think about next year's school supplies and curriculum. After all, you are still racing to finish the things you wanted to accomplish this year.

Nevertheless, conference season has arrived in many parts of the country. You tucked away the invitations to remind you to register, or you buried them in the pile of papers on your desk.

If you are newer to home schooling, you doubtless are eager to go. You cannot wait to finally see and touch the products you drooled over online or in the winter catalogs. You will hear, in person, the speaker you are convinced can teach you how to get the wash done and the math taught at the same time. You have vowed to do better next year! You and your husband can even enjoy a mini-vacation, if you are able to arrange childcare. In fact, you probably submitted your registration fee when the first invitation arrived.
