Capitol Days - Final Opportunity!
May 6 is the final THSC Capitol Day of 2009. Through Capitol Days, home schoolers and their parents have gotten to know THSC President Tim Lambert and experienced new and interactive activities to help them grasp the process of government. In April, students discovered what those too young to vote can do to impact government on many different levels - political party participation, campaigns, and lobbying. This unique hands-on training ground is geared toward upper-elementary and teenagers alike who have a desire to make a difference! The registration deadline is tomorrow, April 29. Register now to attend! THSC Capitol Days are held only during Texas legislative sessions, and two years is a long time to wait!

THSC Fourteenth Annual Awards Banquet Hailed Success
The Fourteenth Annual Texas Home School Coalition Awards Banquet, held April 24 in Austin, was attended by more than 200 people from across Texas. Many prestigious awards were given to accomplished individuals, highlighting the achievements of home schoolers around the state.
Lt. Governor David Dewhurst was the featured speaker of the evening. At a reception before the banquet, Lt. Governor Dewhurst was greeted by the award winners and the event's sponsors. Before the dinner, he gave an address discussing the importance of restoring parental rights in Texas.
As one banquet attendee stated, "It was such an encouragement to attend the THSC Awards Banquet and to meet Lt. Governor Dewhurst and other home schoolers from across Texas!"
Among those honored were Dave and Anne Gebhart, who received the coveted award of the THSC Leaders of the Year. They were recognized for their tireless efforts on behalf of home schoolers and support groups in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and most recently their work on the daytime curfew issue. Receiving special recognition for their Outstanding Service were Gary and Melissa Gates for their role in the law change requiring CPS to have a court order before taking a child from a home, another parental rights issue. David Personius of Keller, who will be entering college as a freshman this coming fall, received THSC's Patrick Henry College Scholarship.

Corpus Christi DHHS Questions Home Schooling Status
An Association member contacted THSC after the Texas Department of Health and Human Services required proof of her children's test scores before she could re-qualify for benefits. Tim Lambert introduced the government employee to the Texas laws pertaining to home schoolers who are applying for benefits. He urged the department representative to treat the applicant as the law required and consider her request for continuation of benefits.

Patrick Henry College, a Home Away from Home?
Jennifer Carden
It was nearly four years ago that I found myself sitting at the Texas Home School Coalition banquet, wearing a semi-bored expression and my best suit, and headed in any direction that would lead me out of the home schooling community.
I was eighteen, and college loomed with promises of the "real world," new experiences, and, most importantly, name recognition. I was looking forward to saying, "I'm going to Baylor/Northwestern/Rice University" without launching into a well-rehearsed, five-minute spiel on socialization, comparative SAT scores, and the state of America's young people.
