Celebrate Our Independence!

July4thOur nation will celebrate its 233rd birthday on Saturday. In earlier days the Fourth of July was both a joyous and solemn occasion - joyous for the liberty we possess and solemn because of the price many paid for it.

In recent times this holiday has become a raucous time of celebration, often with no idea of what is being celebrated. We must remember and teach our children that no other nation has ever had what we possess - a government that is truly answerable to its constituents. We are allowed to complain against our elected officials without penalty. We may vote without fear of reprisal. We have rights that perplex other nations. No one gave us these rights - our ancestors fought for and won them. We have a responsibility to keep them. Celebrate these things on this Independence Day.

waving flagThere is the National Flag. He must be cold, indeed, who can look upon its folds rippling in the breeze without pride of country. If he be in a foreign land, the flag is companionship and country itself, with all its endearment...The very colors have a language which was recognized by our fathers; white is for purity; red, for valor; blue, for justice. And altogether, bunting, stripes, stars, and colors, blazing in the sky, make the flag of our country, to be cherished by all our hearts, to be upheld by all our hands. ~ Charles Sumner

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty.        ~ Unknown

The Schooling Choice We Love to Hate

Big News
This article from an Australian newspaper examines the reasons families choose to homeschool and lists some of the common objections. A historian from Education Next, an educational journal published by Stanford, predicts the future of home schooling as segueing into hybrid education, combining virtual schools, distance learning, and software.

THSC Association Offers Legal Assistance

Scales of JusticeJoining the Texas Home School Coalition Association brings benefits beyond just being connected to the state organization. (Click on the graphic to find out more about the benefits of membership in THSC.) Among those benefits is legal assistance. Staffers intervene when local school officials challenge a family's right to homeschool. Through phone calls and/or letters, THSC ends the confrontation and confirms the right of parents to teach their children at home. (See samples of such letters in past weekly E-Newsletters.)

If these methods do not accomplish the desired results, the Association calls upon its general legal counsel, Shelby Sharpe, to deal with the school districts in the courts. Mr. Sharpe was the lead attorney in the Leeper v. Arlington class action suit, the case upon which the great home school law in Texas is based, so he is more than qualified to handle such problems! (Meet Shelby Sharpe.)

Members also receive help when dealing with other officials about problems related to their home schooling. Often bureaucrats and government officials with whom home schoolers must deal make decisions that may infringe upon their rights. THSC Association experiences great success in confirming home educators' rights as it intervenes in these situations on behalf of its members.

Tyler Social Security Administration Denies Benefits

tim06
When an Association member family's son was denied Social Security benefits because he "...was eighteen years old, not disabled, and not a full-time elementary or secondary level school student," the parents contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote to the Social Security Administration and informed its employees of the Texas law defining a full-time student. He urged the SSA representative to accept his letter of assurance and reconsider granting the son's application for benefits.

Pat Harrell

Teach your kids with loving patience, and they will be patient with you.

"Daddy."

I heard the voice, but I couldn't see the kid that went with it.

"Daddy!" The voice grew frantic.

"Where are you, Story?"

"Up here, Daddy!"

My then-six-year-old son had scaled a tree but couldn't determine the way back down. Back then Story had these strong impulses to climb everything; he just never thought about getting back to the ground.

After scolding Story for not having an extrication plan, I instructed him about which foot to put on which branch. Once my tearful son was back on the earth, I asked, "Story, why did you do that?"

"I don't know," he sniffed.

"What do you mean you 'don't know'?" I pressed.

He sobbed, "I don't know. I just don't know!"
