Invest in Your Support Group

leadershipDo you want to show your appreciation to those support group leaders who sacrificially give of their time and energy to serve the home school community in your area? Perhaps you are a past leader who has stepped down to pass on the reins of leadership to others. Invest in the future of your group and help send your leaders to the 2009 THSC Leadership Training Conference (LTC).

The LTC is designed specifically for Texas home school organization leaders, providing both encouragement and training. The workshops are both informational and inspirational, and the education your leaders receive will benefit your entire group.

Like most home school families, support group leaders are often one-income families, and even a small donation toward the cost of registration might enable your leaders to attend, so consider blessing your leadership team with a gift towards their 2009 registration. They will come back encouraged, refreshed, and ready to pass those blessings on to you!

Pre-registration ends August 31, so show your appreciation now and make your gift go even farther. Contact your leaders and let them know of your intent to bless them with a donation towards their LTC registration OR contact THSC to donate anonymously on behalf of your leader or leadership team, and we will contact your leader(s) to inform them of the donation.

Teamsters Question Home Schooler's Insurance Status

tim06After their insurance company questioned whether or not their son was eligible for coverage, a member family contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote a letter to the company, assuring its representative that the son is a full-time student according to the laws of the state of Texas and, as such, is eligible to be covered by the family's insurance policy.

Do kids need more school?

Not so, say education innovators Gary North and John Taylor Gatto.

Traditional schooling hurts kids. This realization caused a New York State Teacher of the Year to leave the public school system after serving for nearly three decades. John Taylor Gatto is his name, and in 2001 he published The Underground History of American Education. Mr. Gatto has written extensively on the need for parents to abandon the traditional school setting in favor of true education for their kids.

The Real Value of "School"

According to Gatto, it is essential for parents to differentiate between "school" and "education." In an essay that appeared in Harper's several years ago, Gatto wrote that "success" and "school" are often viewed as synonymous but "historically that isn't true in either an intellectual or a financial sense." In other words, attending a good school doesn't guarantee that a student will make it big in their career. The environment alone does not ensure positive growth or development.
