One day during math class I was talking to my three younger children, then ages eight, six, and five, about the difference between subtraction and addition. I asked, "If you have three pencils and take away two, what is that called?" My six-year-old answered, "Stealing." So, after a good laugh, I explained to her that it is called subtraction. ~ Cicely Simien-Avery, Houston

Central ISD Requires Unnecessary Forms, Gives Faulty Information
When an Association member tried to withdraw her daughter from Central Junior High in Pollok, school representatives attempted to have her come to the school to sign forms, one of which was a "Statement of Intent to Homeschool." That form contained faulty information concerning home schooled students' admission to college. The mother sent a letter of assurance, per the TEA's guidelines, and was then visited by the school's truant officer. He demanded that she fill out the papers immediately. She contacted THSC; Tim Lambert faxed the principal of the school and explained how the state expects home schoolers to be treated by public schools.

The Very Best Education for a High School Student
Kevin Swanson
Of the tens of thousands of hours spent in school classrooms, how much of it should we chalk up to a huge waste of time? To the extent that educational efforts fail to focus on faith and character, ignore the individuality of the child, and are hopelessly disconnected from relationships and real life application, we're just wasting time. That is not to say that all educational efforts are a waste of time. But the way that education is conducted in conventional schooling today is painfully inefficient.... Any education that fails to teach children how to fear God in science and history and neglects to adequately relate the parts to a whole system of thought, or fails to integrate that knowledge into life cannot be considered a good preparation for our children. In the end, it can only prepare our students to be very small cogs in a very large wheel.
