Attention, Support Group Members!
Everyday heroes
Support group leaders are special people who give their time, energy, and often their money to head up your local organization - providing you and your family with many opportunities. These everyday heroes step up to this often difficult and stressful job, receiving no tangible compensation. Question: Is there any help out there to train and encourage these brave souls? How do they learn to do this important job?
Answer: Support group leaders from around the state are invited - urged - to attend and be inspired, encouraged, and invigorated at THSC's annual Leadership Training Conference (LTC). They need you!
Help your leaders attend the LTC. Provide childcare, transportation, and even financial assistance for them. They work for you and your fellow home schoolers every day - show them your appreciation, and benefit your group, by sending them to this informative and inspirational weekend in central Texas. You and your entire organization will reap the benefits! Check out more reasons you should send your leaders.
The registration deadline is October 9, so don't delay. Get your leaders signed up today!

Helpful Videos Make Home Schooling Easier
Home schooling doesn't have to be hard! THSC Association offers several videos to help you or someone you know on this home education journey.
If you are just getting started, take a look at Ready, Set ... Now What Do I Do? Tim and Lyndsay Lambert answer questions about where to get curricula, whether or not bulletin boards are necessary, how to teach several grade levels at once, and, "Is this LEGAL?!" You can take a deep breath and relax, as they guide your first steps on this exciting adventure.
Are your children teenagers? You may be interested in hearing about an alternative to dating. In Courtship-One Family's Perspective, Tim, Lyndsay, their son Peter, and his wife Rita share their experiences and ideas about this "new" way for young people to find spouses while keeping their purity intact.
For a historical perspective on home schooling, check out THSC's documentary, Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom. Told by the participants themselves, it depicts the struggles that home schooling trailblazers endured during the 1980s and '90s. Their willingness to persevere led to our home schooling freedom today.

Thad at lunch: "I heard something on the news about Haybale E. Hutchison. Who is HE, and what is he doing with the government?" Well, you can take the boy out of the country, but thank the Lord you can't take the country out of the boy.

Shallowater Requires Appearance at School to Withdraw Student
After a THSC member family withdrew their son from Shallowater Middle School in August and district officials signed for the certified letter, the principal sent the family two e-mails insisting that a parent must come to the school to withdraw the child. The family called THSC, and Tim Lambert sent the district a letter explaining how the state of Texas expects public school to handle the withdrawal of children for home schooling.

Buiding Readiness Skills
Mary James
Blessed with the best home schooling laws in the nation, Texas families are choosing more and more to educate their children at home - and choosing to begin that education at a very early age. Many longtime home schoolers would tell you that they have homeschooled their children "since birth," meaning they have been purposeful in teaching their children, both spiritually and academically, since the very beginnings of their little lives. This is, of course, one of the great benefits of making the decision to teach our own children. We tend to spend the toddler and preschool years working with our children to build a solid foundation and a love of learning that will serve them (and us!) throughout the rest of their elementary, middle school, and high school years.
It is important, however, to understand just what activities will be most beneficial in building that solid foundation. The plethora of materials available can be overwhelming to the parent of a very young child. Desiring to cover everything, we invest in a preschool curriculum that requires several hours a day of seatwork, including phonics lessons, math lessons, and endless handwriting practice.
