Home Schooling: Heroes Take Time to Help Others

Big News
Washington Times
October 4, 2009
Kate Tsubata

It sounds like a movie plot: A secret army of people with special gifts, heroic strength and selfless character move throughout society. They perform impossible feats, saving and changing lives, yet they are unknown, unrecognized and unpaid.

Heroes. That's what I call them. They are people who take on responsibility willingly, using their unique abilities to help others....

Home-schooling families have great flexibility to get involved in the community. Since we're not compelled to follow a certain daily routine, we can arrange study time around volunteer opportunities.

 A Merry Heart Doeth Good

happyface2My elementary-age children have heard earfuls from both my husband and me and from the Jonathan Park Radio Adventure series that the earth did not evolve. We have told our children, "Anytime you hear a scientist say MILLIONS or BILLIONS of years, that is evolution. We know that is not true." Whenever we are in museums or watching science videos, we are always pointing out to the children the evolutionary bias and discussing it with them. They have made a game out of being the "evolution police," listening everywhere for the lies of evolution.

Last week we read in our Christian science textbook, "You could fit one million earths inside the sun."

Immediately my son blurted out, "That's evolution! You just said MILLIONS!"

After grinning about his diligence in defending the truth of creation, I had to explain that the word MILLION does not always equate to evolution. Guess a math lesson is in store for us next ...

Ector County Requires Unnecessary Forms

tim06
An Ector County ISD school official attempted to require an Association member to complete district forms in order to withdraw her child for home schooling. This attempt was made after the parents had sent a certified letter--to which district officials did not respond until almost a month after it was received. After more fruitless communication with school officials, the parents contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote to a school representative and informed her of what the Texas Education Association actually requires of parents removing their children from public school for the purpose of home schooling.

Articles and advertisements in THSC's weekly E-Newsletter are included because of their potential interest to the home school community of Texas.  Inclusion does not signify an endorsement. We encourage parents to practice due diligence before participating in any program.  THSC is not responsible for any material or ads that may be encountered when clicking on links that take the reader away from the THSC website.

Preparing Our Sons
 Preparing Our Sons to Serve

There is an epidemic of mediocre, prayerless, visionless, immoral, irresponsible men in our culture. If we continue to train our sons the same way, we will not stem the tide. If we see home education as nothing more than a means to better scores, a safer environment, and individualized learning, we will miss a golden opportunity. We have an opportunity to raise a generation of men who will turn the world upside down. We have an opportunity to invest in the lives of future visionaries, statesmen, churchmen, and family leaders. We must keep all of these things in mind as we educate our sons. As we do so, we must prepare them to serve Christ, to serve their wives and children, and to serve their communities. The Bible must be our guide.
