Home Schooling Family Finalist in Texas-wide Competition
A Seabrook family, the Engelberts, have been named finalists in the TXU Power Saver Challenge 2 contest. The contestants compete to make their homes the most energy efficient. Mr. Engelbert submitted an essay describing why his family would be a great candidate for the contest, and his entry was chosen as one of five out of 1500 entries. The family then created a five-minute video demonstrating why their home needed an energy makeover.
See an interview of the family by a local TV station.
Now that the family has reached the finals, they need votes to help them win. Voting has started, so vote today and every day until October 30 at 5 p.m. Help a home school family win!

My daughter just turned seven years old, and she asked me why my mom never homeschooled me. I told her there were eleven kids in my family and my mom never had the time or money to do it! She told me even though I only went to public school, I was still a pretty smart teacher! I'm very proud of her, and I now know she is proud of me, too! ~ Nina Zepeda, Grand Prairie

"Where Do the Stories Come From?"
John Erickson
Kids are always curious to know where Hank the Cowdog stories "come from." It is a simple question, but it does not have a simple answer.
I write about what I know (ranch life), but beyond that, the creative process remains a mystery to me, even though I am involved with it every day. What I have learned over a long career is that if I follow certain patterns of behavior, I am able to write at least two good books per year. For twenty-five years I have knocked on Hank's door, and so far, he has always appeared.
Discipline is an important part of the process. I write every morning, rain or shine, summer or winter, for no more than four and a half hours. I have learned that if I go beyond four and a half hours, my writing shows fatigue. For me, writing is a long-distance race, not a sprint, so endurance is a quality I cultivate.
