2009 THSC Leadership Training Conference
Homeschool Group Leader bloggers report on last weekend's event.
The THSC Leadership Training Conference held this past weekend was a great success! Leaders from across the state gathered together and were challenged and re-energized by messages by Norm Wakefield, Tim and Lyndsay Lambert, and others; in addition, they were encouraged by other leaders during times of networking and sharing! Read the following firsthand account from Homeschool Group Leader: "We are having so much fun this weekend at the THSC Leadership Conference! ... "We are hearing home school group leaders talk about how they love to come here to receive great encouragement and tons of hope. This is the annual Leadership Conference THSC hosts for home school group leaders in Texas. It is exciting to meet so many leaders, relax and fellowship with them, and glean amazing wisdom from them... "... One of our favorite parts was how people jumped in and shared inspiring ideas of what's worked for them. We were all encouraged! It was so much fun!!"

Turn Back the Clock!
Daylight Savings Time Ends November 1
At last - some phones have been trying to do this for a month - it's time to turn the clocks back and dig in for the winter. Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday morning, November 1, so fall back Saturday night. Otherwise you may be the only one in the church parking lot on Sunday. That means you have to get the doughnuts, right?

Anything but Typical: Meet Shanaya Fastge
"From a distance, she seems like a typical 10-year-old girl who loves playing her guitar, making jewelry and spending time with her friends. Get to know her though and it soon becomes evident that Shanaya Fastje is anything but typical.
"This extraordinary little girl is already a successful author. She has written and illustrated two children's books, 'Mystery School,' and 'Mystery School: Monday Sleepover Disaster,' both of which are available in 25,000 stores nationwide. Currently, she is working on her third book in the series.
"'The books are based on all the adventures that happen in my life,' says Fastje, while she dangles her little feet off the end of the living room couch. 'I'm already trying to decide on a title for my fourth book.'"

After months of drought this summer in our part of Texas, we finally received some much-needed rain toward the end of August. This was a great blessing to our family because we raise so much of the food we eat, and we had struggled with irrigating crops all during the growing season. Well, the morning it decided to rain, I was cooking breakfast in the kitchen while my children were seated around the table practicing their penmanship. I was so very pleased with the change in weather, that I was singing my favorite church hymn, "The Unclouded Day." My six-year-old piped up and asked disgustedly, "Mom, why would anyone write a happy song about an unclouded day?" After thinking about it for a few seconds, I replied, "Well, son, I don't guess that he was a farmer." To which he responded, "After you've prayed every day this year for rain, I don't think God would be happy that you're singing that song, and I sure hope that man was wrong, because I don't want to go be with God if he never lets it rain there!" ~ Lauren Mason, Donie

Bryan Social Security Officer Denies Benefits to Home Schooling Senior
When the Bryan Social Security Administration (SSA) office denied continuation of her son's benefits because "he is 18 years old, not disabled, and not a full-time ... student," an Association member contacted THSC. Tim Lambert wrote the SSA representative and reminded her of the state's regulations concerning home schoolers. The SSA also requested copies of documents that are not required by the state of Texas; Lambert acquainted the representative with the portion of the statute that makes that clear.

Occupying Preschoolers While Teaching Older Children
David Hazell
Teaching our older children is already a challenge. However, what do we do when our preschooler says, "I want to do school, too, Mommy"? There are ways to give our little ones what they need at this important stage of life without sacrificing academics for our older children. Having preschoolers is a time of life that should bring joy and excitement. Our firstborn at this age had our undivided attention, and it was fun. He learned to read at age three because we were both motivated and wanted the best for him. However, our second learned at age five and our third at age seven. What about our fourth, fifth, and sixth? Do we treat them as if they are just in our way? Will they have to be on their own because our oldest is in algebra and absorbs all our time? Every child needs to have his parents' attention academically, and every child needs to have reading taught as if he is a firstborn. Birth order often determines the reading ability of our children, because our younger ones do not get the attention they need during the pre-reading stage of their lives.
