Remember Our Veterans ~ November 11

FlagThatDoesn'tFly

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month ... peace. But peace is fleeting, and since that War to End All Wars, there have been many others. Each new conflict requires more soldiers to protect our country and our freedom, and brave men and women have always stepped forward to fulfill that duty. To honor them, we offer this Pledge for Veterans Day and this poem, written by a veteran of WWI and WWII. Click on the graphic for Veterans Day activities to share with your children.

Soldier, What Did You See?

Don Blanding

What did you see, Soldier? What did you see at war?

I saw such glory and horror as I've never seen before.

I saw men's hearts burned naked in red crucibles of pain.

I saw such godlike courage as I'll never see again.

What did you hear, Soldier? What did you hear at war?

I heard the prayers on lips of men who had never prayed before.

I heard men tell their very souls, confessing each dark stain.

I heard men speak of sacred things they will not speak again.

Help THSC Defend the Family Against CPS

scalesChild Protective Services (CPS) presents a growing problem for parents in Texas. THSC has responded to the crisis by offering Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars for attorneys who are willing to help. Through these classes, attorneys learn how to counter and combat CPS intrusion into the lives of home schooling families.

Attorneys who agree to take one pro-bono case involving CPS will receive free registration; participants will earn 6.0 MCLE credit hours upon completion of the course.

Here's what you can do:

THSC is working to build its network of home school-friendly attorneys to benefit families in need. On December 11 in El Paso, THSC will host the CLE class for 2009. We need you to inform attorneys in your city about this seminar. To receive brochures to distribute to attorneys in your area, e-mail events@thsc.org. Please include your address and the number of brochures needed.

My daughter and I had just read an ancient history lesson that covered the Sumerians. The author credited the Sumerians with the invention of the wheel. My daughter told me she surely was glad the Sumerians invented the wheel; if they hadn't we wouldn't be able to turn our cars. They could only go straight ... hmm.

Local Home School Team Makes Most of Its Opportunity

Big News
From the Temple Daily Telegram:

"Football can be complicated as anyone involved would like to make it or as simple as drawing pass routes in the dirt on a playground.

"What it should always be is fun for those who desire to play it.

"John Ash is attempting to incorporate some of all of those things as the coach of the Centex Homeschool Chargers, a six-man team that is four years in the making. The Chargers play a full junior varsity schedule and were 4-1 going into the weekend.

"Not bad for a team that came together primarily at the behest of a persistent 13-year-old, Stephen Ash, John's son, who is now the Chargers' sophomore quarterback. A few phone calls were made and the makings of a middle school six-man team came together. Local public and private schools donated equipment and, amazingly, they were able to put together a nine-game schedule that year."

A Henderson County Child Protective Services (CPS) worker contacted THSC, requesting confirmation that two children were being homeschooled "with your organization." Tim Lambert responded by informing the worker that CPS has no authority to investigate families with regard to compulsory attendance laws.

Such a simple question! Is the answer that obvious? Not when it comes to high school algebra! I am not talking about some new way to add algebraic fractions. I am referring to the age-old practice of teaching two years of algebra in high school, which, presumably, makes up a complete course in algebra. These courses may have been called Algebra 1 and 2, or they may have been called Beginning Algebra and Advanced Algebra. In either case, the implication was that each class comprised one-half of a complete algebra course. However, if you look at the table of contents in any "second-year algebra" book, you will find that at least fifty percent of the book is a repeat of "first-year algebra."
