THSClogoIf you have not yet joined the only statewide organization for home schoolers, one which for more than twenty years has supported the rights of those who choose to educate their children at home, now is the time! (Click on the graphic for more information about who we are and what we do.)

Once you join, you'll be eligible to take advantage of all the discounts and benefits we offer to members. THSC Association is continually adding not only more member discounts to its Member Benefit Package but also new avenues to make joining more manageable. Check out the ways it has gotten even easier to budget for your membership!

One option for Texas home schoolers is the lifetime membership. For a one-time payment of $1,000, you can continue to support THSC year after year as the Association continues to support your family. If you are planning to homeschool through high school, this is a great choice!

To take advantage of this option, call our office toll-free at (888) 200-4903 and speak to our friendly, helpful staff, or send your questions by e-mail to staff@thsc.org. You can download an application to print and complete, then mail or fax to THSC.

If you would like to join or renew your membership, you can still do so online; however, the lifetime membership option is not yet available at the Web store.

States Have Trouble Passing "Tebow" Laws

Big News
Ever since Tim Tebow, the former home schooled high school football standout, won the Heisman Trophy, states have been faced with the introduction of "Tebow" laws, which would allow home schoolers and other students in alternative education situations to participate in public school sports' programs. Opposition is heavy from public school officials and parents, most of whom believe that students should either "get in or get out."
Some home schoolers are guarded at the prospect of the law passing; they worry that it would allow schools to place additional regulation on home schooling families. For many families, however, the passage of the law could be the difference between continuing to homeschool and enrolling their high school athletes in their local public schools.

Students Take Control of City Council Operations

Read All About It"Students of CHERCH, a homeschooling group in Huntsville, participated in a mock City Council meeting Tuesday afternoon to learn the ins and outs of city government.

"With Mayor J. Turner overseeing the session, the students went through the motions of a real City Council meeting, discussing the establishment of a recreational center and a resolution to provide free pizza to all the kids of Huntsville.

"Before the mock session began, Turner discussed the role City Council plays in the community. He said the council makes important decisions concerning community services and budget.

"Turner also said it's important to teach children about the United States government because other countries don't have as many blessings.

"'It's important to learn how we are different and why we are different,' he said."

Tim Lambert to Speak at West Houston Home Educators Meeting

He will discuss the Biblical basis for Christians' involvement in government and how that involvement is vital to maintaining parents' rights to direct the education and upbringing of their children.

Home schoolers in the Houston area are invited to attend. For more information, go to their Web site and click on "Monthly Meetings." Childcare will not be provided. The meeting will be at Peace Community Church, 5151 Addicks Satsuma Road, Houston.

Tulia ISD Makes Unnecessary Demands

tim06
After a member family withdrew its child in order to homeschool, a secretary at Highland Elementary in Tulia called the mother and requested that she and her child come to the school, fill out paperwork, and show administrators their curriculum. The following day the mother sent a letter of assurance to the school and notified THSC. Tim Lambert wrote the principal, reminding him of the state requirements for withdrawing a child to homeschool.

Prevent & Correct Dyslexia
You Can Prevent and Correct Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a fairly new word (I could not find it in the 1971 Oxford English Dictionary), but it is one that we see and hear with increasing frequency, and it has become a buzzword in the educational community. Although each of the many books and articles written on the subject of dyslexia has a slightly different spin, the common ground most share is the death sentence to the student and his or her parents. I have even read, "Once dyslexic, always dyslexic." Is this death sentence a reflection of current societal thinking? (Victims are everywhere.) Is the word "dyslexia" a scapegoat for the school system in which such labels originate and which receive funds for students in special programs? How many sleepless nights have mothers and fathers spent blaming themselves - -or just lying awake trying to engineer a way to remove the unfortunate label - while the powers that be (teachers, administrators, doctors) slam the gavel on the child's file, condemning him or her to a life of special classes that go on and on, year after year, seeming to make little, if any, difference in the child's ability to progress? As a parent, I would strongly resist any label that anyone wanted to put on my child.
