Defending the Family from CPS

Scales of JusticeAs you may know, false Child Protective Services (CPS) allegations have become an issue for many parents in Texas. THSC has responded to the growing crisis and the urgent need for the legal defense and advocacy of families by hosting Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes for attorneys. Through these classes, THSC partners with two outstanding attorneys to teach their colleagues how to respond to and battle with CPS when it involves itself in the lives of innocent home schooling families.

We need your assistance!

THSC is working to build its network of home school friendly attorneys. On December 12 in Austin, THSC will host its final CLE seminar for 2008. To receive brochures to give to attorneys in your area, e-mail events@thsc.org. Be sure to include your mailing address and the quantity needed.

For a historical perspective on home schooling, check out THSC's documentary Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom. Told by the participants themselves, it depicts the struggles that home schooling trailblazers endured during the 1980's and '90's. Their willingness to persevere led to our home schooling freedom today.

CPS Tries to Send Foster Children to Public School

tim06
After a CPS supervisor gave an Austin THSC Association member family permission to homeschool its foster children, an educational specialist from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services demanded that the children be placed in public school. Tim Lambert wrote to the TDFPS representative explaining the reasons that homeschooling the children would be in their best interests.

I Hate Math, So Why Do I Need to Learn It?

Fred Worth

  mathsymbols

"I hate math!"  I often hear this statement from people.  Often the implication is that the person should not have to learn mathematics or cannot learn mathematics.  Sometimes it is that the person sees no value because "I'm never going to use it."  Let me give a short response to these issues.

Should people learn mathematics?

Obviously, as a mathematician, I think the answer is "Yes."  But the reason may surprise you.  It is not solely because of the usefulness of the subject.  Let us be honest.  Many of the skills one learns in algebra will never be used in real life.  It is unlikely that most people will ever have the need to factor a quadratic.  The most important reason for learning mathematics is that it helps develop the ability to think.

Being able to think logically is vitally important in life.  If I cannot think logically then I cannot make intelligent decisions on many issues that will be of importance in my personal life.  I will not be able to vote wisely. I will not be able to make good financial decisions.  Parenting decisions can be hindered in many ways by poor logical-thinking skills.
