Encouragement for Home Schoolers: Social Skills
What about socialization? Occasionally this
old, tired question rears its bothersome head. People
tell home schoolers that their children won’t be
normal. In her article, which begins below,
Sheila Campbell has an answer that encourages
parents to take another look at normal social
skills.
Normal Social Skills
by Sheila Campbell
Social skills, although no longer a major issue among
the home school community, are still often items of
concern among public school officials and those who
simply do not understand how normal social
development can occur outside a classroom.
Although we have been homeschooling for almost ten
years, I am still occasionally questioned about the
social development of my children. As a result, I
have been carefully observing the social skills of the
public school children I know, and I have come to the
conclusion that home schoolers do not have
normal social skills. A field trip we once
attended confirmed this theory.

Be Part of the THSC Home School Documentary!

The Texas Home School Coalition is in the process of
producing a documentary on the modern history of
the Texas home schooling movement. The purpose
of the documentary is to relate the compelling story
of parents willing to take on the state to do what
they believed was best for their children in the early
1980s....
We are searching for family photographs of support
group meetings, field trips, the Austin TEA Party,
book fairs – anything related to home schooling
during the time period from the late 1970s,
throughout the 1980s, to help us visually tell the
story.

needed to give them confidence and initiative in
stepping into the opportunities that God places in
their paths.
“We desire to inspire young people with a vision for
furthering God’s kingdom and to propose avenues for
creative service with which they can minister to
those in their communities and around the
world.”

VOTE!

We would like to encourage all Texas home schoolers
to vote early between now and November 3, 2006!
(Click on the graphic to see schedule of 2006
election dates and deadlines.)
Why should you vote early? One never knows what
hindrances might present themselves on Election
Day, November 7th. As home schoolers, and
parents in general, most of us understand that
principle!
[You still have Good Citizenship opportunities with your
students between now and Election Day. Texas
families need to educate their friends and neighbors
about the importance of selecting the candidates
who will best represent the interests of families.
Volunteering for such candidates is also an option.
You can vote now and look forward to learning about
and participating in lobbying through the THSC
Capitol
Days
next year as the new legislative session
begins! Registration information is now on the
website!]
Whether you vote early or wait until November 7th,
the main concern is, don’t forget to vote!

Home School Kids Not Sheltered

New Jersey home schoolers answer the socialization
question in an article by Michelle Pittman, which was
posted October 22, 2006, in The Express
Times at
nj.com. Excerpts from the story follow:
“Home-school parents: Kids not sheltered
“One of the most common concerns critics express
about home-schooled students is they will have a
hard time later in life getting along with others.
"‘Many people assume the only way a child can learn
to play with others is to be in a classroom of 20
other kids the same calendar age, sitting at desks six
hours a day,’ said Jill Drake, one of the founders of
The Kids Homeschool Network. ‘How does spending
your entire day with age-grouped peers prepare you
to socialize in the diverse real world? Other than 13
years in public school, when do you spend the
majority of your day with people within two years of
your age?’”
