THSC Offers Legal Assistance
Joining the Texas Home School Coalition Association brings benefits beyond just connection to the state organization. (Click on the graphic to find out more about the benefits of membership in THSC.) Among those benefits is legal assistance. Staffers intervene when local school officials challenge a family's right to homeschool. Through phone calls and/or letters, THSC ends the confrontation and confirms the right of parents to teach their children at home. (See samples of such letters in past weekly E-Newsletters.)
If these methods do not accomplish the desired results, the association calls upon its general legal counsel, Shelby Sharpe, to deal with the school districts in the courts. Mr. Sharpe was the lead attorney in the Leeper v. Arlington class action suit, the case upon which the great home school law in Texas is based, so he is more than qualified to handle such problems! (Meet Shelby Sharpe.)
Members also receive help when dealing with other officials about problems related to their home schooling. Often bureaucrats and government officials with whom home schoolers must deal make decisions that may infringe upon their rights. THSC Association experiences great success in confirming home educators' rights as it intervenes in these situations on behalf of its members.

Remember Our Veterans
Veterans Day is November 11. Originally called Armistice Day, it solemnly recognized the end of actual fighting in World War I on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month. Armistice Day became an official U.S. holiday in 1926 and a national holiday twelve years later. Its name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954, to honor all American veterans.
The men and women who serve in our Armed Forces do so because they choose to - and they deserve our thanks. Additionally, those who served in past wars are dying in great numbers; let them know before it is too late that their service is appreciated.

Celebrate America's Christian Heritage

"The religion which has introduced civil liberty is the religion of Christ and His Apostles.... This is genuine Christianity and to this we owe our free constitutions of government."
(Noah Webster, History of the United States, 1832, public school textbook.)
Like man, America did not just come into being as the result of a fortunate accident. Providence provided for the organization and establishment of our nation. This land was part of a greater plan.
November 18-24, 2007, marks the sixteenth consecutive celebration of America's Christian Heritage Week.

It's not easy to be a home school football player: substandard facilities (city park), human goal posts, and financial sacrifice. For these boys, however, it's all worth it. Their Friday night dreams are being fulfilled-one game at a time.

Lessons from a Changing Table
"It's just not fair," I cried out to no one in particular. My rocking chair creaked in agreement as I simultaneously rocked and protested. I didn't have the courage to speak the words directly to God, although the awareness that He heard me anyway nagged at my pouting heart.
Burning tears rolled down my cheeks and dripped onto my very pregnant front. I was two thousand miles from any family, pregnant with our third child, and we were a struggling one-income family. We had recently sold a nice home and, in our move, had settled for an older but clean rental house with an extra bedroom for a nursery.
We hoped for a girl because we had two sons. White eyelet curtains and a beautiful white Jenny Lind baby bed were already placed in the room. All that was lacking was the piece of furniture that was the cause of my tears - a white, wooden changing table. Read the article.... |
