Father to Father: Walking Your Talk
homeless

Have you ever heard the truism about children learning more from what is caught than what is taught? Pat Harrell had one of those unexpected teachable moments, about which he shares in the article that begins below:

Practicing Your Preaching
Pat Harrell

My grandparents called it “practicing what you preach.” This fall, as we go back to our home school, I have promised my wife and kids that I will not ask them to do something unless I am already doing it. Of course, when my grandparents shared their clever philosophy with me, I gave them my best six-year-old blank stare and wondered what in the world those crazy, old people were talking about.

  • Make Plans to Attend 2007 THSC Capitol Days!
  • texascapitol

In the last several legislative sessions Texas home schoolers have made their presence and their opinions known to the legislature through our Capitol Days. THSC Association is now planning Capitol Days in Austin for the year 2007.

During each morning session, THSC representatives, legislators, and legislative staff members educate attendees about the legislative process and train them to lobby. Each month there will be different speakers and topics, depending on the current issues of concern for Texas home educators. In the afternoons, students, parents, and chaperones will head to the Capitol to meet and lobby legislators and then reconvene for debriefing (sharing and feedback) sessions.

Don’t miss these opportunities for great political science field trips as you also work toward meeting the Good Citizenship requirement. Click on the graphic to get more information about next year’s Capitol Days.

The New York-based westsidenewsonline.com posted an article on October 29, 2006, highlighting some home school families’ activities and philosophies. Excerpts from the article follow:

“There’s no place like home - for school

“While many children roll out of bed, get dressed, prepare for school and head out the door to the school bus, some children skip the school bus routine and head to the kitchen table for their reading, writing and arithmetic lessons...

“Parents opt for home schooling for a variety of reasons, some because they are unhappy with the peer pressures their children face, they believe there is a lack of personalized attention given in public schools or for religious reasons.
