"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source, right? The same magazine that employs Michael (Qurans in the toilets at Gitmo) Isikoff. Here I promised myself this week I would be nice and I start off in this way. Oh what a mean man I am.

"The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

"So being the knuckle dragger I am, I starting thinking, ''What we are so unhappy about?'''

A Merry Heart Doeth Good

happyface2My five-year-old son, Joel, had a worksheet full of pictures. He was supposed to tell me which picture started with the "s" sound. I pointed to a smiling, shining sun, and he said, "Thhhhhhh-un... Nope."

I prompted, "Ssssss-un?"

He said, "Oh!  I didn't underthtand mythelf."

He is almost eight now and has lost his adorable lisp.

Ector County ISD Attempts to Oversee Home School

tim06
As an Ector County family was signing the school's withdrawal forms, school officials told the mother that they could come to her home and inspect her home school at any time. She was signing the district's forms because they told her that her child would not be legally withdrawn until she did. She consulted THSC, and Tim Lambert wrote a letter reminding Ector County officials of TEA's rules concerning home schoolers.

Articles in THSC's weekly E-Newsletter are included because of their potential interest to the home school community of Texas.  Inclusion does not signify an endorsement. We encourage parents to practice due diligence before participating in any program.  THSC neither recommends nor endorses any material or ads that may be encountered when clicking on links that take the reader away from the THSC website.

In this article, Mary James lists and dispels ten of the most common misconceptions about home schooling.

"NUMBER 10

You cannot homeschool through high school.

As with many of the myths of home schooling, this one is disappearing with time. Of course, many, many families have successfully homeschooled through high school (including our family!). Still, it can be a daunting consideration. Many people fear high school, but with so many options now open to home schoolers, we really have no reason to worry.

"NUMBER 9

If you homeschool your children, they will all be geniuses.

Sorry .... It is true that the one-on-one tutorial method is superior and that on average, home schoolers have the test scores to prove it. However, there are just as many students struggling at home as in public schools. The good news is that with this low student-to-teacher ratio our students have a better chance of success."
