Public Relations: Be Ready To Answer
orator

Home schoolers often find themselves the objects of criticism. It is good public relations for us to have a reasoned response with which to state the case for parental choice in directing the education of our children. George Clay, THSC board member, expressed such in a letter-to-the-editor; both the letter of criticism and his answer are included.

AN ANSWER APTLY SPOKEN

Making progress in the public relations battle continues to be very important to home schoolers. What is public opinion today often becomes law tomorrow. All home educators—through their lives, words, and actions—are making statements for (or against) the validity of home education as an educational and social alternative. Sometimes, however, people may have opinions based on things they have read, such as magazine articles or letters-to-the-editor. We should all be aware of opportunities to impact public opinion positively for home education. The following letter-to-the-editor and answer by a home schooler, featured in the Bowie News, illustrate one method of answering our detractors–nothing but the facts, ma’am!

In her article, posted October 17, 2006, The Cary News staff writer, Wendy Mondello, tells the story of how she and her husband made the decision to homeschool their son. The article begins:

“Homeschool a good fit for one food-allergic child

“My 3-year-old son, Joseph, puts on his backpack, climbs into the bus and goes to preschool — down the hall. The school bus is really a board book that folds into the shape of a big bus and the teachers that greet him for morning circle are my husband and me. Yes, our family has entered the world of homeschooling.

“Joseph’s life-threatening allergies to peanuts, nuts, wheat, dairy, egg and soy led us to the decision to homeschool, an unconventional choice, perhaps — especially for the daughter of a preschool teacher — but a choice I believe is right for us.”
