Helpful Videos Make Great Gifts!  Christmas Special!

tim&lyndsay06Do you need some Christmas gift ideas? THSC Association offers several DVDs that could be blessings to people you know on this home education journey. (To see our whole line of great home school resources, click on the graphic.)

For someone getting started, a great idea would be Ready, Set ... Now What Do I Do? Tim and Lyndsay Lambert answer questions about where to get curricula, whether or not bulletin boards are necessary, how to teach several grade levels at once, and "Is this LEGAL?!"  Viewers can take a deep breath and relax, as the Lamberts guide them through the first steps on this exciting adventure.

Do you have any teenagers (or parents of teenagers or pre-teens) on your list? They might be interested in hearing about an alternative to dating. In Courtship - One Family's Perspective, Tim, Lyndsay, their son Peter, and his wife Rita share their experiences and ideas about this "new" way (that's been around a long time) for young people to find spouses while keeping their purity intact.

To that special home schooling spouse or friend or hardworking support group leader, you might want to give an historical perspective on home schooling, through THSC's documentary, Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom. (Told by the participants themselves, it depicts the struggles that home schooling trailblazers endured during the 1980s and '90s. Their willingness to persevere led to our home schooling freedom today. Those same people on your gift list might also be interested in the companion DVD, Miracle in Texas, the story of the landmark Leeper v. Arlington case, as told by Shelby Sharpe, lead attorney.

Yes, we are running a Christmas special! If you buy any two or more of any of these great DVDs, you can receive a 25% discount.

     One DVD     $20 each

     2+ DVDs      $15 each

Like our Christmas special on T-shirts, orders must be placed by noon on Friday, December 19, in order to ensure that DVDs are received by Christmas.

Texas Home Schoolers Invited to Enter Junior Duck Stamp Contest

JuniorDuckStamp

Home schoolers are invited to participate in Texas' Junior Duck Stamp Conservation and Design Program, a nationwide program that pairs science, the arts, and other core subjects to teach a greater awareness of our natural resources. Curricular activities include exposure to migratory waterfowl and their habitat as well as lessons to help increase students' knowledge and appreciation of migratory birds, plus activities geared to motivating students to take on active roles in conserving these species.

As part of the program, K-12 students are invited to submit artwork depicting ducks and geese in the annual art competition. Students do not have to complete the curriculum to participate in the art contest. Each year in Texas, the Fish and Wildlife Service sends out more than 100 ribbons to winners of the competition. The art competition judging is an open event held at the Bass Pro Shop in Pearland, Texas, in late March 2009.

If you have any questions, call Jennifer Sanchez at 979-964-4011 or send her an e-mailWhen emailing, please put "junior duck stamp" on the subject line.

Conservative Legislative Study Program for College Juniors and Seniors

TCCRI_logo2The 81st Texas Legislature will be the inaugural term of the Conservative Legislative Study Program, coordinated by the Texas Conservative Coalition Research Institute (TCCRI). Each student accepted to the program will be placed in the office of a state representative or state senator as a Governor William P. Clements, Jr. Scholar.

While college courses in civics, government, and history are an integral part of a student's educational experience, the Texas Legislature presents a unique learning environment for students interested in public service and public policy. That is why the TCCRI is excited to offer this educational opportunity to college juniors and seniors.

Through the Legislative Study Program, the next generation of conservative leaders will have the opportunity to work directly with legislators to help advance conservative policies.

The deadline to apply to this program is December 15. Please forward this information to any college juniors and seniors you know who might be interested.

For more information, please contact Program Director Brent Connett at 512-474-6042 or by email.

Big News"Last week my family and I spent four blessed days at my wife's ancestral farm, a beautiful spot located between Navasota and Brenham in historic Washington County known as the birthplace of the Republic of Texas in 1836. The land, possessing rolling hills, tranquil ponds and a plethora of Bluebonnets has been in my wife's family since the mid 19th century. It is a wonderful place rich in nostalgia and strong family roots. I confess that it is one of our favorite places on earth.

"It was during this trip that we occasioned to visit the Museum in nearby Chappell Hill where the region's and much of my wife's family history are on display. Housed in what used to be the Chappell Hill Female College established in 1856, one felt immediately transported into another place and time. There were letters, photographs and placards all of which offered amazing insight into the lives and culture of this nearly forgotten community."

Missouri City Police Officer Intrudes on Home Schoolers

tim06
In last week's E-newsletter, THSC published a letter written to the Rosenberg Child Protective Services office. This week's letter is related to the same issue and is addressed to the police officer who illegally entered the Association member family's home and who was very aggressive. Tim Lambert wrote the letter, informing the officer that he had advised the family to seek legal counsel in response to his actions.

Articles in THSC's weekly E-Newsletter are included because of their potential interest to the home school community of Texas.  Inclusion does not signify an endorsement. We encourage parents to practice due diligence before participating in any program.  THSC neither recommends nor endorses any material or ads that may be encountered when clicking on links that take the reader away from the THSC website.

Henry David Thoreau once penned, "I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived." I was reminded of this quotation one night as I lay on the trampoline with my teenage children, gazing up into the night sky. I wanted to raise my children deliberately. I wanted to "live deep and suck the marrow out of life" (Thoreau).  I wanted to enjoy every moment of their childhood and not watch them grow to adulthood and suddenly realize my opportunity to teach them, to spend time with them, to enjoy learning with them was over and I did not even know them.
