Live Near Arlington? Then You're Invited!

Lyndsay Lambert will speak at a meeting of the Arlington Association of Home Educators (AAHE) on Friday, February 8, at 9 a.m. Attendees must sign-in by 8:45. Childcare will be available.
Lyndsay will speak on "Home Schooling: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly." In this talk, she gives an honest and realistic presentation of home schooling from the perspective of a sixteen-year veteran and mother of four. Besides discussing the ways that home schooling has blessed her family, she covers some of the problems encountered by home schoolers in this day and age and gives some tips on how to deal with them. For the new home schooler, she gives a preview of what to expect. For the experienced home educator, she gives a word of encouragement for the tough times.
The AAHE meeting will take place at Mayfield Road Baptist Church, 1701 E. Mayfield Road, Arlington, TX 76014. Participants are welcome to reconvene for lunch at CiCi's Pizza, on the corner of Cooper and Mayfield, after the meeting. All proceeds from the meal will go to AAHE. Good Citizenship Opportunities!
Do you ever scratch your head when thinking about how to fulfill the requirement of a "study of good citizenship"? THSC continues to offer its Good Citizenship Program, which rewards students for their participation in the political process and helps them fulfill that state requirement. (See What Is Good Citizenship?) Certificates are printed, upon request, for students who have volunteered at least forty hours in Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and/or Legislative Process, in any combination..
At the 2008 THSC Awards Banquet, on April 11 in Houston, the student who has volunteered the greatest number of hours in any one area (or has registered the most voters) over the last twelve months will be presented the award for that area. Each award winner and his/her parents will be invited to be our guests at the banquet.
The volunteer hours may be tracked on a form that can be downloaded and printed as often as needed. Students will be granted eight hours for each Capitol Day attended. Please note that, while certificates will be issued upon request at any time, awards will be given based on hours worked between April 1, 2007, and April 1, 2008. The forms must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 1 if students are to be considered for awards.
A great way to learn and have an impact at the same time!

Texas A&M Corps of Cadets - Aggie Eagle Program
The Aggie Eagle Program (AEP) is a recruiting program designed to increase the number of Eagle Scouts in the Corps of Cadets. In that sense, its focus is on a set of character traits and leadership skills enjoyed by those Scouts who attain the rank of Eagle. The AEP is open to high school juniors and seniors who meet certain academic standards. If a junior or senior is still actively involved in scouting, it is assumed that they are on track to reach their Eagle Award. Therefore, the AEP is open to Life Scouts, Sea Scouts, Venture Scouts, and recipients of the GSUSA Gold Award.

Locking a Nation into Permanent Childhood

Vin Suprynowicz uses John Taylor Gatto's research to argue that government schooling has become a business whose only success comes from making learning seem difficult.
"Socrates foresaw if teaching became a formal profession, something like this would happen. Professional interest is served by making what is easy to do seem hard; by subordinating the laity to the priesthood. School is too vital a jobs-project, contract giver and protector of the social order to allow itself to be 're-formed.' It has political allies to guard its marches, that's why reforms come and go without changing much. ..." Read the article.... |

Heisman Trophy Winner's Parents to Share Testimonies
Bob and Pam Tebow, the parents of Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, are among the keynote speakers at the iTell365 Evangelism Conference, set for March 2-4 at First Baptist Church of Orlando.
The Tebows have been missionaries in the Philippines for many years and began homeschooling their children twenty-six years ago. All the children received college scholarships and are involved in ministries of their own. Tim Tebow, 2007 Heisman Trophy Winner from the University of Florida, stated in an ESPN profile aired during the award ceremony that his priorities are "...number one, my faith in God; number two, my family and my relationships with my family; number three, academics; and number four is football."

Free Enrollment for Participation in Survey
Jason Presley, a Web programmer, a former computer trainer, and a home school dad, is trying to develop a computer curriculum for home schoolers. The classes would be online and structured so that the student would need very little assistance from the parent/teacher. He is asking for input from other homeschooling families.
Home schoolers who participate in his online survey will receive free enrollment in one class for one year. The survey should take only a few minutes.

Home Schooling for the Future
With the holidays behind us and those New Year resolutions still fresh on our minds, it is a good time for each of us to take a step back and remember why we are enduring the joyful and rewarding pain of home education. For example, teaching our children academic skills is important, but I hope you would agree that there is more to home schooling than just academics. Protecting the hearts and minds of our children in an ever-increasingly perverse society is important. I hope you would agree that there is more to home schooling than simply sheltering. Educating our children at home is every bit of those two goals but not as ends unto themselves. They serve, rather, as the means toward equipping our children in terms of a larger vision that believes our children, when trained and educated in the proper context, can make a difference in the course of our nation's future.
