THSC Patrick Henry College Scholarship
In keeping with its mission to serve the home schoolers of Texas, Texas Home School Coalition has established a scholarship fund for Texas home school graduates who attend Patrick Henry College. The amount of the scholarship depends largely on the amount of money THSC has in the fund and how many students are awarded THSC PHC scholarships in a given year.
The deadline for submission of an application is Friday, February 29, 2008 (postmark date).

A distance learning school in California sponsored a video contest for home schoolers in which the students answered the question: What's cool about home school? A 14-year-old from Santa Paula took first place.

Home School Basketball Festival
Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) is proud to host its first Home School Basketball Festival in conjunction with Indiana Christian Basketball Alliance, March 31-April 4. YBOA's National Headquarters is located in Orlando, Florida. This event will take place in Polk County, Florida, which is about thirty minutes south of Orlando. Each age division is limited to sixteen teams for both boys and girls. The entry fee is $400 per team. Click on the graphic for more information.

But What About Socialization?

This article reports on the results of several research projects comparing home schooled students to students in public schools. Researchers studied self-esteem, suicide rates, and how students treated other people during the different studies. The results will encourage home schoolers and soothe the qualms of skeptical relatives.

Lamar CISD Requires Illegal Certification
Lamar CISD attempted to require parents withdrawing their children to homeschool to notify a specific official of their intention. After meeting this requirement, the parents would receive a certificate exempting their child from compulsory attendance in school. Tim Lambert reminded the district of the state's actual requirements for home schooling parents and urged the district to bring its policies into compliance.

Brown v. Board of Education: Legacy and Challenges
February is Black History Month in the United States. Originally established as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African-American author and scholar, this event evolved into Black History Month in February of 1976. This commemoration has increasingly been referred to as African-American History Month, although both names are currently in use. THSC is pleased to feature the following insightful article by a home school father and the founder of Minority Homeschoolers of Texas.
Today education is the most vital function of local and state governments. Its importance is stressed by enforcement of compulsory school attendance laws. Until the mid-1950s, legal school segregation (equal but different or separate but equal) was the norm in the United States of America. Read the article.... |
