THSC PAC Announces Candidate Endorsements

THSCPAClogoThe Texas Home School Coalition Political Action Committee (THSC PAC) has announced its endorsements for this year's primary elections.

THSC PAC
bases its endorsements of candidates who are current members of the legislature on their voting records.  For those who have not been previously elected to the legislature, the PAC bases endorsements on their responses to its questionnaire and on recommendations of home schoolers and other local leaders who are familiar with them.  It does not endorse candidates with no voting record unless they respond to the questionnaire, so the PAC can ascertain their positions in writing on home school issues.

Who Wrote Romeo and Juliet?

shakespearefellowship

For years the true authorship of the works attributed to William Shakespeare has been in question. The Shakespeare Fellowship is an organization dedicated to the study of that question. For the past few years the Fellowship has sponsored an essay contest for secondary students.  The purpose of this contest is to involve high school students in a creative and analytic synthesis of knowledge about Shakespeare, the Shakespeare canon, and the Shakespeare authorship question.

Essays must be between 750 and 3000 words. All entries must be postmarked on or before June 15, 2008.

The writers of the winning essays are awarded cash prizes ranging from $600 for first place to $50 for sixth place. The names of winners and winning essays will be published on the Shakespeare Fellowship Web site.

Students Encouraged to Enter Adopt-a-Beach Contest

adoptabeach"Jerry Patterson, Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, is calling on Texas students to participate in the 12th annual Adopt-A-Beach 'Treasures of the Texas Coast' Children's Art Contest. The deadline to submit artwork is Monday, March 3, 2008.

"'Each year, I'm impressed with the creativity of Texas schoolchildren,' Patterson said. 'Their artwork helps us produce a great calendar in support of the Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Program.'

"The contest began in 1996 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Adopt-A-Beach Program. The annual competition encourages Texas schoolchildren to learn more about the Texas coast and express what they've learned in their art."

Youth Travel Opportunity to Japan

JapaneseHomestayWhat will your kids learn this summer?  How about geography and social studies firsthand?  Texas Global Education and Cultural Exchange offers such an opportunity through a Japanese homestay program.  Texas youth (ages 14 - 18) can travel to Japan for the adventure of a lifetime July 10 - August 7.  This program is designed to allow students to experience another culture through a homestay exchange.  Youth learn about Japanese family life, food, culture, and customs, and they learn a great deal about themselves as well.  Japanese host families are gracious and kind and will treat their American son/daughter as one of their own.

"All the things I did and the places I saw were amazing, but it wouldn't have been nearly so enjoyable if I didn't adore my host family!"   -- Summer 2007 Exchange Delegate to Japan

"My best experiences were with both my host family and seeing amazing places with new friends.-- Summer 2007 Exchange Delegate to Japan

"If for nothing else, go for the people, food, sights and experiences.  It was a once in a lifetime experience." -- Summer 2007 Delegate to Japan

For more information and program price, contact the coordinator, Wendy Wallace, at 817-994-3335 or tge.wendy@gmail.com.  Applications are due March 1, 2008.

Brownfield ISD Attempts Illegal Withdrawal Procedure

tim

When a Brownfield couple withdrew their son to homeschool him, school officials threatened to file charges of truancy against them if they did not come to the school, sign withdrawal forms, and complete an application to homeschool. Tim Lambert urged the officials to reconsider and follow the rules mandated by the state.

Living History: The Holocaust Memorial

I have long advocated experiential learning, but how does one experience World War II firsthand when the war is over? The answer is: through the eyes and memories of one who was there ... one who can impart not only the chronology of events but, more importantly, the emotions and feelings of one who lived the horror, terror, agony, and grief of the war.  Such was my children's experience with Mike Jacobs, survivor and founder of the Dallas Memorial Center for Holocaust Studies, on our visit to the memorial.

Seeing

The entrance to the memorial center is through a train boxcar like those used to transport Jews to the concentration camps. Cramming your standing group into the corner square marked on the floor of the boxcar, you can barely breathe amid the crush of bodies. You begin to sense the Nazis' utter disregard for humanity. Inside, pictures of victims' bodies piled high, efficient death showers, smoking ovens, and hollow-eyed survivors make your heart weep.
