Show Your Local Leaders Your Appreciation
Local support group leaders spend countless hours working on behalf of the home schoolers in their areas. Take time April 6-12, during Home School Leader Appreciation Week in Texas, to acknowledge their sacrifices.
Give certificates of appreciation to your support group leaders to let them know that they are appreciated! THSC will print these attractive documents on behalf of your group and send them FREE upon request. Some groups have presented these certificates to their leaders at their support group meetings, and others have held special meetings to recognize these people who sacrifice time and energy for their groups.
If you think your local support group leader deserves a prize, here's your chance. Nominate him/her for the THSC Leader of the Year award! In conjunction with Home School Leader Appreciation Week in Texas, THSC presents the Home School Leader of the Year award to outstanding leaders during its Annual Awards Banquet. This award is based on testimonies by appreciative members of the winner's support group. The process requires at least three members of the group to send letters (tip: more letters carry more weight) in which they document why their leader(s)--either an individual or a couple--should be selected as the THSC Home School Leader of the Year. Only one leader/couple may be nominated per group.
Nominations must be postmarked no later than March 21, 2008. The group leader chosen will be honored at the Annual Awards Banquet to be held in Houston on April 11.

George Washington on Church and State
A book review by Tom Pauken of Dallasblog.com discusses a new work by Tara Ross and Joseph Smith, Jr.: Under God: George Washington and the Question of Church and State. In his blog, Pauken states:
Ross and Smith make the case that ... George Washington was consistent in his emphasis on the critical role played by religion in fostering "the morality and virtue" Washington deemed necessary for our military success and our establishment of the American Republic. He wrote in October 1778 that "by a want of Virtue we ruin and defeat ourselves." Where does "Virtue" come from? In George Washington's view, it was fostered by religious faith.
The book and this review both encourage the reader to look beyond only Thomas Jefferson to another founding father-George Washington-to see what he felt about "church and state."

We Have a Winner!
Congratulations to Sherry Troxel from Lorena, the winner of the Who Said This? Contest in the February issue of the Texas Home School Coalition REVIEW. Sherry received a copy of the Courtship-One Family's Perspective DVD.
The quotation, stated by Rutherford B. Hayes, was:
To vote is like the payment of a debt--a duty never to be neglected, if its performance is possible.
We appreciate the readers of the THSC REVIEW who sent us their guesses! We hope that the REVIEW is a blessing and that you will be watching for the next quotation question. You could be the next winner!

Palestine CPS Worker Steps Outside Her Authority
A caseworker from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (TDFPS) in Palestine tried to force a member grandparent to allow her to interview a student. The caseworker was investigating an allegation that the student was "not reading well." Tim Lambert wrote a letter reminding the TDFPS officials that Child Protective Services (CPS) workers have no authority to investigate or enforce compulsory attendance laws or assess educational levels of children.

Coming and Going
It was impossible to be involved with Campus Crusade for Christ when I was in college in the early 1970s and not know the Great Commission of Matthew 28:19-20. It is permanently engraved in my memory: "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations..."
That verse is why I shared my faith and discipled fellow students. It is why I joined the staff of Campus Crusade in 1975 and lived in Eastern Europe for three years. It is why my husband Clay joined staff in 1975 and later went to seminary. It is why we ministered in Austria for three years as a newly married couple.
Even when Clay and I settled down and started our family, we could not escape the inevitable conclusion that our responsibility as parents was to "make disciples." If we failed to train our own children at home to be disciples of our Lord, how could we pretend to train anyone else? Read the article.... |
