Special Families – Special Needs
Special Families

Often, the professionals try to discourage parents of children with special educational needs from attempting to teach their children at home. THSC has been blessed in knowing Doug and Patsy Arnold, founders of Texas’ Special Kids, which is a ministry to just such parents. The article that follows, written by Patsy to all home schoolers, was published in the THSC REVIEW magazine in 2003, and we hope it will be a blessing to your family.

What Can I Do to Help?

"There is a seventy percent chance that your son will never walk, talk, sit, stand, feed himself, dress himself, or do anything but lie limp in your arms for the rest of his life." The neurologist's words echoed in our ears as we stared blankly at the wall. To this day, every time we sing that song in church about "my darkest hour," I think about that trip to her office. Overwhelming grief rocked our world. That day, the baby we thought we had ... died. A child with a different potential future emerged. His body was the same. Our perception of him changed. Our love for him did not.

    The New Teacher

The following excerpts are from a story covered by Leslie Olson at 8WISHTV.com. The story, posted January 11, 2006, tells about home schooling in Indiana and focuses on home schooling parents (The New Teachers) with their varying reasons and philosophies, professional educators with their concerns, and a university professor with a positive statement about what these families accomplish with their students.

“Home school advocates say there are many studies showing home education successes. Indiana University Professor of Education Dr. Robert Kunzman says most studies have been conducted by home school advocates.
“‘The studies that have been done on home schooler academic achievement have not been comprehensive. They often times been self selected participation,’ he said.
“But Dr. Kunzman and the Indiana University admissions director say home schooled students who apply to IU are usually very qualified.”
