Courts Outlaw Home Education in California
The following is from a San Francisco Chronicle article, March 7:
"A California appeals court ruling clamping down on homeschooling by parents without teaching credentials sent shock waves across the state this week, leaving an estimated 166,000 children as possible truants and their parents at risk of prosecution.
"The homeschooling movement never saw the case coming."

CBS News Video: Why Families Home School
The CBS Early Show recently did a two-part story on home schooling. The first part, "Three Ways to Home School," shows that home schooling allows children the time to pursue passions they would otherwise have no time for, including socializing with other children. Click on the graphic to view the video of the first segment.
The second story shows the reasons different families homeschool. It focuses on a military family whose father is a Marine, serving in Iraq at the time of the interview, and a family that suffered a tragic loss.

Good Citizenship Opportunities!
Do you ever scratch your head when thinking about how to fulfill the requirement of a "study of good citizenship"? THSC offers a Good Citizenship Program, which rewards students for their participation in the political process and helps them fulfill that requirement. (See What Is Good Citizenship?) Certificates are printed, upon request, for students who have volunteered at least forty hours in Voter Registration, Political Party Process, Campaign Process, and Legislative Process, in any combination. Each year the program culminates with rewards presented at the annual THSC Awards Banquet.
At the 2008 Awards Banquet, to be held on April 11 in Houston, the student who has volunteered the greatest number of hours in any one area (or has registered the most voters) over the last twelve months will be presented the award for that area. Each award winner and his/her parents will be invited guests at the banquet.
The volunteer hours may be tracked on a form that can be downloaded and printed as often as needed. Students will be granted eight hours for each Capitol Day attended. Please note that, while certificates will be issued upon request at any time, the awards will be given based on hours worked between April 1, 2007, and April 1, 2008. The forms must be postmarked or e-mailed no later than April 1 if students are to be considered for awards.
A great way to learn and have an impact at the same time!

Official at San Antonio ISD Unlawfully Requires Forms
When a San Antonio member withdrew her son from his elementary school to homeschool him, a school official called and demanded that the mother come to the school to sign withdrawal forms. Tim Lambert wrote a letter and reminded the district representative of the law in Texas.

What Are Your Plans After High School?
In a series of three articles, Becky Preble, one of the speakers to be at the 2008 THSC Convention in August, addresses some of the questions young people face after graduation. This first article addresses various ways to determine a direction for each graduate's future. Watch for the second and third articles in the next two THSC E-Newsletters!
Ask most young people what they plan to do after high school graduation and you will usually get one of two answers: "I have no idea," or " I definitely want to be a doctor, lawyer, auto mechanic, truck driver, etc." For those of you who fall into the "I have no idea" category, talking to peers who claim to have known since they were three years old which career path they wanted to pursue can be intimidating. In addition, each time you have to explain to someone that you do not really know what you want to do, you may feel embarrassed by your apparent lack of direction.
