Appreciate Your Local Leaders - April 6-12

trophy_2Local support group leaders spend countless hours working on behalf of the home schoolers in their areas. Take time April 6-12, during Home School Leader Appreciation Week in Texas, to acknowledge their sacrifices.

Give certificates of appreciation to your support group leaders to let them know that they are appreciated! THSC will print these attractive documents on behalf of your group and send them FREE upon request.  Some groups have presented these certificates to their leaders at their support group meetings, and others have held special meetings to recognize these people who sacrifice time and energy for their groups.

Validity of Home School Graduate's Diploma Questioned

tim

Tim Lambert contacted the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) after someone questioned the validity of a home schooled graduate's diploma.  The young woman was about to graduate from a cosmetology program when the allegation was being made that she was not a high school graduate and therefore had not been eligible to be enrolled in the program.  In the letter to the TDLR, Mr. Lambert cited examples from the Texas Education Code, the Texas Workforce Commission, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards, which all support the validity of diplomas from home schools as evidence of high school graduation.  THSC later received a phone call from the recipient of the letter at the TDLR, who confirmed that he had received the letter, the issue had been resolved, and the home school graduate would be allowed to graduate from the cosmetology program.

Articles in THSC's weekly E-Newsletter are included because of their potential interest to the home school community of Texas.  Inclusion does not signify an endorsement. We encourage parents to practice due diligence before participating in any program.  THSC neither recommends nor endorses any material or ads that may be encountered when clicking on links that take the reader away from the THSC website.

There are two questions most often asked of home educators. The first is, "What about socialization?" This question is met with an inward sigh and is patiently answered in a variety of ways. It is easily sloughed off and does not affect us very deeply. The second is harder to disregard, because the one asking is most likely a fellow Christian believer, and the query is not simply for more information but is a question that challenges our calling - "Aren't we supposed to be salt and light to this generation?"

Most of my home educating friends are earnest believers who have chosen the path less trod in order to train up their children at God's prompting. This query is particularly difficult because it strikes at the very heart of obedience to God's direction. Have we not been led? Is the call to home educate our children in opposition to the command to be salt and light in the world?
