Father to Father
Very often, as these days many moms work outside
the home, families question whether they can afford
losing the extra income if mom becomes full-time at
home. In his article published in the THSC
REVIEW, author Larry Arnold works the
figures and concludes that not only can you afford it
but also that possibly you cannot afford not
to homeschool.
Enjoy reading the article
that follows.
Can You Afford Not to Homeschool?
How much is a home school mom worth? Granted, we
men could never pay somebody to do what our wives
do. They are tutors, home-keepers, child-taxi
drivers, tear-wipers, and friends. They also put up
with us, and the fact that they do it all because they
love their families makes them priceless. Suppose our
business sides wanted to calculate their value in real
dollars? How much is your home schooling wife
worth? Would you believe over $40,000 a year?

Home Schooling in the News!

In an article by Jun-Ho Cha Kum-Chun Hwang,
appearing March 25, 2006, at donga.com, news
focuses on the spread of home education in Korea.
The following paragraphs are excerpted from the
article.
More [Korean] Parents Choose Home School
Option
“After his parents pulled him out of elementary school
to be home schooled last December, nine-year-old
Paju resident Kim Seong-hyeon recently received a
strange gift: a refrigerator.
“Kim’s mother Lee Yoon-jeong (36) said, ‘Through
home schooling we came to discover our child’s talent
[electronics].’ Lee decided to teach Seong-hyeon’s
brother, age 5, at home as well.
“More households are opting for home schooling
rather than sending their children to regular schools.
“The Ministry of Education and Human Resources
Development estimates that about 1,000 households
are home schooling their children.”

Home School Siblings Excel At Science Fair

In his article appearing at Roanoke.com March 22,
2006, author Paul Dellinger tells of home schoolers
who do not fit the preconceived notion of isolated,
lonely, homebound kids. It seems that sometimes
the winners of national and international competitions
are far from that picture. His examples are the
children of Jeff and Charlene Long of Pearisburg (VA),
Chris, 16, and Erin, 15. The teens will represent
Southwest Virginia at an international science fair in
May.
The following are excerpts from the article.
Home schooled brother, sister win
science honors
“[The Long family] had been playing a board game
involving attractions in various states, Jeff Long
recalled, and got to talking about some they would
like to see.
“‘And all of a sudden, we were talking about “Let's go
do some of these things,” he said. ‘I don't know why
some people think home-schoolers are home-
bound.’"
“In May, Chris and Erin will be making another trip, to
Indianapolis to compete in the 57th Intel
International Science & Engineering Fair (click on
picture to see fair details). This is the world's largest
pre-college science celebration, with more than
1,400 students from more than 40 countries
competing for scholarships, tuition grants, internships
and a grand prize of a $50,000 college scholarship.”
