Making It Happen
Lesson Plans

Is organization your strength, or do you flounder as you try to organize your thoughts, let alone put on paper what to do in your home school? Kristy Keating wrote the article that begins below as an aid to those who need an organizational lift.

LESSON PLANS FOR THE disORGANIZED

I am a very organized disorganized person. Just ask my family. I may not have a particular piece of paper in a file, but I can tell you what stack it is in on my desk! Can you relate to that?

Old-Fashioned Courtship and How It Works Today

Many families today are exploring biblical courtship alternatives to replace the heartbreaking dating game which has become the norm in our culture. Having now passed through the process of courtship with their two oldest sons, Jeff and Marge Barth share from experience many of the essential aspects to courtship, as well as important qualities for preparing sons and daughters for marriage.

    Price: $9.00

    Courtship - One Family's Perspective
Join Tim and Lyndsay Lambert, and their son, Peter, and his wife Rita as they talk about the different ideas and theories about courtship that are circulating in the home school community. They cover the definition of courtship (from their perspective), the fathers' roles, and preparation on the part of the young people. Peter and Rita then share the story of their own courtship.
    Price: $20.00

Senator John Cornyn’s office contacted THSC and asked if we would pass along this information to Texas home schoolers. Senator Cornyn will be nominating qualified students for appointment to U.S. service academies. • John Erickson

THSC has been blessed in getting to know John Erickson a.k.a. Hank the Cowdog. Many, not just in the state but also the nation, have been aware of the Texas wildfires of 2006. Mr. Erickson has stayed in touch—and was touched in a personal way by the fires.

    His article follows.

    Wild Fires in the Panhandle
    by John Erickson

Last Sunday we drove into Perryton for church. By the time we got to church, the wind was howling straight out of the west. After church, the wind was blowing even harder, gusts up to fifty or sixty mph. We ate lunch and drove back to the ranch. As we approached the caprock, we saw a brown cloud across the river valley. I said, “That must be dust from New Mexico.” Then I caught the smell of smoke. That was the beginning of six bad days.

Marylee Shrider writes a column that appears twice a week in The Bakersfield Californian. In her Mar. 20, 2006 column, she addresses the question, “What is it about home schooling that gets folks so steamed up?” She refers to educational statistics and national competitions as well as voting records. Still the question remains. The following are excerpts from the culmination of this column.

    Shrider: Fruits of home schooling

“[Charissa] Wilson's [home schooled] children do well academically and participate in sports programs through the YMCA and North of the River Recreation and Park District. Next year, when her oldest starts junior high school, he'll take advantage of extracurricular programs offered to homeschoolers through local private schools.

“Wilson says home schooling isn't for everyone, but works well for her family. She and other home-school parents say they don't understand the hostility sometimes generated by their educational choice.
“I don't either. The homeschoolers I know are some of the happiest, most well-educated and well- adjusted kids I've ever met. Perhaps until we, as a village, can raise better, it's time to get off the home- school-bashing bandwagon.”
