Many Recognized at THSC's Annual Awards Banquet
THSC held its 13th
Annual Awards Banquet this last Saturday in Houston. Hear what one
attendee had to say about the event:
"We had a terrific
time!
"The banquet
was done with such class. The speakers were incredible. The
music and singing added the perfect touch.
"Last week I had one
of those ... "Am I doing a good enough job educating my kids/would they be
better off in school?" kind of weeks. I left the banquet with a solid
reminder of why I am homeschooling. I needed a fresh perspective
and left fully-charged that I am doing what is right. We might be
behind in math (ADHD reasons, etc.), but all three of my kids have terrific character,
political knowledge (very young), and a love for God. We will catch up
eventually, but you can't catch up with a lifelong process of being raised to
be a good person!
"Anyway, thank you...."

Expelled-No Intelligence Allowed
Ben
Stein, economist, author, educator, actor, and lecturer, takes on the hallowed
halls of academia, exposing the bias against the true free exchange of ideas. His new documentary Expelled-No Intelligence Allowed shows
how, when it comes to discussing even the possibility of intelligent design,
there can be no discussion.
Professors who attempt to allow the idea equal time in class are penalized in
various ways, including being denied tenure and losing their jobs.
This
movie premieres in select theaters April 18. Get your rebellious friends
together and go see it!

Assistant Principal Requires Curricula for Review
The assistant principal at a River Road ISD elementary
school in Amarillo called a member
parent, stating that he had received her letter after she had resent it with
the correct school name on it. In the course of the conversation, he also
stated that, while her child had been withdrawn as of February 1, the district
always required the parents to present their curricula to be inspected by the
school. The parent consulted THSC, which responded to the request by pointing
out that, according to the state, home schools are not under the regulation of public
schools. The THSC staff enclosed the letter from the commissioner of education,
which specifically states, "It is not necessary for parents to ... present
curriculum for review."

Linking the Generations Through Home Education
There are many decisions to face when a family chooses
to home educate their children - curriculum choices, schedule changes, activity
selections, and sacrifices to be made! One thing that strikes fear deep in the
hearts of many new home schooling families is how to break the news to the
grandparents.
In 1981 when we began home educating our sons, some
families were taken to court, and others endured the rejection of parents who
were convinced that their adult children had really lost all good sense. Even
with the acceptance of home schooling in recent years, you may be facing
criticism from friends and family - especially the grandparents. Read the article.... |
