Home School and Older Students
When challenged by their son about a decision to
serve his country, author Christina Manuwai and her
husband were faced with the reality of what the
values they had instilled in their children might
ultimately require. Her article that appeared in the
THSC REVIEW follows.
Thou Teacheth My Hands to War (Psalm 18)
by Christine Manuwai
The Lord God instructed the children of Israel to
require all the able-bodied men over the age of
twenty to go to war. In the first chapter of the book
of Numbers, the phrase “all that are able to go forth
to war” is repeated fourteen times. The only
exceptions to this instruction were the Levites, who
were established as priests for temple service. We
see that the modern-day nation of Israel continues
to observe this commandment by requiring not only
all young men but also women to serve two years in
the military. During the reign of King David, God gave
the tiny nation unprecedented military victories and
even expanded their borders. During that time, the
nation of Israel experienced tremendous spiritual
momentum as well. The years that followed in King
Solomon’s reign were marked as a period of peace
and prosperity. That peace was achieved through
the military strength of his father.

THSC Custom Diploma

It has been exciting to see all the diploma orders
arriving at the THSC office! There was a time when
it was assumed that once home schooled children
reached junior high or high school, they would be
handed over to the “professionals.” We congratulate
you parents and students who have stayed the
course! (Click on picture of diploma to read an
article: “Staying the Course:”)
For those from whom we have not yet heard, DO NOT
FORGET THE DIPLOMA!
In Texas, as private school officials, parents decide
the requirements for high school graduation. When
met, the student may receive a diploma. THSC
Association now makes available this custom diploma
on which you may have not only your student's name
and graduation date but also your school's name and
a life verse, if desired. You can choose from four
different word styles and several types of paper.

Another Case for Home Schooling

Mary Jacobs, in her column posted March 26, 2006,
at Dallas.com, opens the piece with the subtitle:
“After years of fighting the obvious and neutralizing
gender differences, we need to give our boys
permission ...” Ms. Jacobs then gives her analysis of
the fallacy of feminizing little boys to make them
more sensitive. The following are excerpts from her
column.
Mary Jacobs: To be a Man
“It's amusingly ironic: A "menaissance" is emerging
from the belly of the politically correct beast. In a
book recklessly titled Manliness, Harvard government
prof Harvey Mansfield proposes rehabilitating the
concept – not just the qualities of heroism, courage
and assertiveness that the term implies, but their
distinctly male incarnations.”
“[T]he feminist notions that inform our educational
system help girls – a good thing – but hurt boys. The
idea that differences between boys and girls can be
neutralized with the right socialization was an
experiment worth trying – but it didn't work. ‘We
can't just teach boys how to be adults,’ he says. ‘We
have to teach them how to be men.’’’
In closing, she states: “We need to love our boys in
all their boyness, not in spite of it.”

Home Schooling in the News!

John Taylor Gatto and George Bernard Shaw are
quoted in an article by Daniel Williams. His article,
from TIME Asia Magazine, appeared Apr. 09, 2006,
at Time South Pacific. Those interviewed hold very
strong opinions about the benefits of home
schooling/unschooling over classroom schools.
Excerpts from the article follow.
“A schoolteacher in Melbourne for 10 years before
[daughter] Anastasia came along, [Katharina Russell-
Head] might have been expected to regard teaching
as a job best done by professionals. But that's not
her view at all. While teacher training is worthwhile,
she says, its main benefit is to prepare trainees for
tutoring large groups.

website “remodeling.” Now you can easily locate
three pages that focus on home school students and
graduates. From this page (Yes, It Works!),

School Graduates: Where Are They Now?”
and “Congratulations!”
We have been blessed that many of you have
allowed us to share in these important experiences!
We hope that you, in turn, will be blessed by this
change. Check out these shining stars!
