Happy Mother's Day!
Sunday, May 11, is Mother's Day.
THSC wishes a blessed and wonderful day to the most committed mothers we know, home schooling moms!
"Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body."
Elizabeth Stone
"A mother's love for her child is like nothing else in the world. It knows no law, no pity, it dares all things and crushes down remorselessly all that stands in its path." Agatha Christie

Invisible Mom
Have you ever wondered whether or not you are fading into thin air. Do these kids see you? Do they think that supper magically appears every single day? ...that the laundry is done by little elves? ...that you really DO have eyes in the back of your head that see where they stuck their shoe, phone, math book? Well, THEY may not see you but Somebody does!
"As mothers, we are building great cathedrals. We cannot be seen if we're doing it right. And one day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we have built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women."

TAKS Free - Home Schooled Children Exempt from State Tests

"While Texas public school children grapple with TAKS tests starting today, home-schooled children in Wichita Falls will enjoy a TAKS-free week.
"That's on top of a TAKS-free school year, according to Wichita Falls mothers who teach their children at home.
"While testing is part of home school curriculums, it is a small sliver compared to the time spent throughout the year in public schools preparing students for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills.
"For home-schooled children for the 2007-08 school year, there have been no daily TAKS worksheets, no TAKS-test-taking strategies, no pre-tests - and most of all, no state-imposed pass-or-flunk-your grade standards.
"That also means the children have been shielded from threats of flunking, fears of test day and test anxiety."

Important Change to Pizza Hut "Book-It" Program
Pizza Hut sponsors a program, BOOK IT!, designed for students, K-6th grade, to encourage reading. The idea is that the student and teacher set a monthly reading goal. After achieving that goal, the student receives a coupon for a free personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut.
In the past, each participating support group had a coordinator for this program. However, in order to provide a more effective level of customer service, enrollment is now being accepted on an individual family basis only. Each family signs up directly with Pizza Hut rather than going through a coordinator.
If you wish your students to participate, you must place your order via the BOOK IT! online ordering system, the downloadable order form, or by calling the BOOK IT! hotline. BOOK IT! Program materials will be distributed directly to each participating family by mid-September, 2008. Check out the program for home schoolers.... |

Houston ISD Official Requires Unnecessary Forms
Parents of a member family in Houston ISD withdrew their child from school and sent the prescribed letter of assurance by certified mail. School officials signed for the letter, but the mother received a phone call several days later saying that she must come to the school in order for her child to be withdrawn. Tim Lambert wrote the school and reminded the officials of Texas' requirements for withdrawing students from public schools for the purpose of home schooling.

Letter to a Home School Mom
Anonymous
As I sat one night writing a note of thanks to my wife and the mother of two, it came to me that my gratitude was surely shared by home school dads across the country. I decided to write my letter to all of you home school moms from all of us home school dads. The reason the home school movement has exploded exponentially in this country and around the world is the commonality of high values, deep devotion, and specific convictions shared among most home school families. With these shared views toward our families, our religion, and our country, it only makes sense that many fathers would have the same thoughts of thankfulness to each of you moms.
