Armed Forces Day
Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May. The day was created in 1949 and was a result of the consolidation of the military services into the Department of Defense. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated by parades, open houses, receptions, and air shows. Because of their unique training schedules, National Guard and Reserve units may celebrate Armed Forces Day/Week over any period in May. The purpose of Armed Forces Day is to honor Americans serving in the five branches of military service: the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard.
If you have a loved one in the armed forces, THSC would be proud to honor him or her. Please send information about your soldier, sailor, airman, or marine to review@thsc.org, Attn: Military. Click on the graphic to see other home schoolers who are serving their country.

Texas Strike Force "Walk to Win"
We share this invitation from Texas Victory 2008 for your information. For those who are Republicans, this would be a good opportunity to practice "good citizenship" (and learn about the political campaign part of government. Those who are not Republicans should contact their political parties about opportunities during the campaign season.
Dear Fellow Republican:
... On May 17, Texas Victory 2008 (a project of the Republican Party of Texas) will be kicking off the statewide "Texas Strike Force Walk to Win" program. This will be a collaborative voter identification effort between Victory '08, Republican candidates, and county party organizations around the state. Our statewide goal is to knock on 100,000 doors before Memorial Day!
... Voter ID is a critical function of this year's Victory effort. By identifying Republican and Democrat voters now, we will be able to conduct a more efficient and effective GOTV program in the fall. That means time and money saved by our State Party and our Republican candidates. ...
Roger Williams Chairman, Texas Victory 2008

Tennessee Home Schoolers Face Job Losses - Diplomas Invalid?

Three Tennessee daycare workers have lost their jobs, and a police officer is in danger of losing his. These people were not habitually tardy or insubordinate; the police officer has an exemplary record. The only problem with these employees is that they all have diplomas from home schools, and in Tennessee, that is a huge problem right now. The only thing that can save their jobs now is passage of H.B. 1652, which would revise the new interpretation that the Tennessee Department of Education has placed on the way the state views diplomas from home schools.

Alto ISD Official and Cohorts Harass Home Schooler
A member parent asked for help from THSC Association after being visited by the town police chief, a local teacher, and, the next day, the manager of her apartment complex. An official with the school also refused to sign the withdrawal forms that she filled out at his request.
Tim Lambert wrote a letter to the school official explaining the laws and regulations governing home schooling in Texas and enclosed the letter from the commissioner of education. He also warned the official that further attempts to harass the parent, either personally or via third parties, would result in legal action.

In My Opinion Me, Myself, and Harry Potter
Last summer I decided to get acquainted with Harry Potter. When he first arrived on the literary scene several years ago, my husband and I decided that we as a family did not need to intimately know a wizard child going to wizard school. Recently I noticed many Christian parents allowing their children to get to know Harry quite well. I thought perhaps I had been wrong-too hasty in my judgment--so I decided to do some research. I prayed for God's guidance and protection as I did three things.
First, I researched each reference in the Bible to witches, witchcraft, sorcerers(ies), soothsayers, wizards, etc. (forty-six in all). As I did this, I also investigated the Hebrew and Greek definitions for each of the words, to see exactly what these words meant. Second, I read Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the fourth book in the series. Since I did not have time to read all four books, I chose Goblet of Fire because it is characterized as the "darkest" so far. Each of the next three books is supposed to get "darker"--whatever that means. I wanted to get to the heart of the complaints about Harry, and I figured the fourth book would take me to the core of the problem, if it existed.
When I finished these two projects, I began reading Harry Potter and the Bible by Richard Abanes, who is the author/co-author of nearly a dozen books on cults, the occult, and world religions. Mr. Abanes has already done exhaustive research, which he carefully documents, on all four books, which the average parent does not have time to do. My prayer is that this article will help parents discern how intimate they want their families to become with the very popular child-wizard, Harry Potter.
