This Contest Left a Bad Taste in Home Schoolers'  Mouths!

Big News

Last week Subway® Restaurants launched a contest encouraging children to write stories telling how healthy sandwiches affect people's lives. The sandwich company, in conjunction with Scholastic News Service, offered lots of prizes, including a grand prize of $5,000 worth of playground equipment for the winner's school. And if the winner had no school because he was homeschooled? No problem - home schoolers were banned from competing.

No one knows what the real thinking was behind this hugely unpopular decision, but it is unlikely that Subway and Scholastic will ever ban "independent schooled" children again. Subway and Scholastic have both apologized, Scholastic doing so almost immediately after home schoolers began to react.

Ned Barnett for American Thinker presents his take on this meatball of a contest in this article from May 29.

Doctoral Student Seeks Research Subjects

childrenplayingA doctoral student from Texas A&M, Chris Cherry, is seeking home schooled alumni and older home schoolers and their parents to help in his research. His dissertation focuses on the relationship between socialization and fertility/family planning behaviors. Because of the "limited outside socialization" that home schoolers experience, he thinks they will be an interesting source of information. He plans to use brief, self-administered surveys and short personal interviews to achieve his research goals.

SHE Mustangs Win State Softball Championship!

SHEsoftballchamps

The Softball for Homeschool Educated (SHE) Mustangs hosted the second annual Texas Homeschool State Softball Tournament in Katy, Texas.

In pool play, the SHE Mustangs let the competition know that the road to the state championship would have to go through them. The SHE Mustangs (24-4) beat the Family Educators Alliance of South Texas (FEAST) Patriots (16-6) to put them in the loser bracket. As in last season, the two teams left playing for all the marbles were the two who met for last year's championship.

The FEAST Patriots, the visiting team, and SHE Mustangs, the home team, put runners on the bases the first two innings, but neither team could score runs.

After a hard-fought game between two longtime rivals, the SHE Mustangs came out on top, with a score of 3 to 1.

Citizen Questions State Legislator's Comments

texasflag

A Lubbock citizen takes a state official to task for his comments about the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (FLDS) case. One of the writer's main concerns is the senator's suggestion that the FLDS members should bear the cost of the legal procedures carried out against them.

The Metamorphosis of My Son

A Saturday, a few years ago, proved to be the beginning of one of the greatest lessons I have ever learned. God, as He does so often, taught me a lesson, and it came in the form of a tiny caterpillar. My step-cousin Tina knew that I had been looking for a monarch egg without success. On a bright Saturday during my visit to Dallas to see my family, Tina presented me with a tiny caterpillar, a bug box, and enough milkweed to feed him for a week. I was ecstatic! Tina warned me that my son would carry that bug box everywhere and that when the time came to let him go free, it would be hard to part with him. With great excitement and Tina's gentle warning tucked in my heart, Jordan's and my first "real" home school project began.

Tina was right about the bug box being carried around, but it was not Jordan; it was I! I was so captivated by this little caterpillar. I knew in my heart that God was going to use this little creation to teach me a lesson. To be quite honest with you, I was a little nervous about what the lesson was going to be.
