Belles and Rebels Masquerade Ball
by Leah Driggers
"...Many home school families have never heard of
Civil War reenacting, and even if they have, the cost for
sewing or buying dresses, uniforms, tents, and
period
correct dishware can be overwhelming for those
wanting to just try it out. That is why two other home
school graduates and I decided to introduce the home
school community to Civil War times through a
first-time-ever, home school Civil War ball. Guests
could
step back in time to the world of 1865 and experience
Civil War manners and the finer side of reenacting, at
a fraction of the cost of a normal ball."

SATCH Mavericks Softball Team: State Home School Champs

"On Saturday, May 5, the
Sports Association of Texas for Christian
Homeschoolers
(SATCH) Mavericks , coached by Oscar Zertuche,
traveled to San Antonio to
play in the inaugural Texas Homeschool State Softball
Tournament. In pool play, the Family Educators
Alliance of South Texas (FEAST) Patriots beat the
Mavericks to put them in the loser's bracket. In the end
the SATCH Mavericks played FEAST Patriots for the
championship. After two and a half innings of no-hit
ball and very strong defense played by both teams,
FEAST got their first and only hit. The rest of the game
belonged to the Mavericks.
"The Mavericks won the game 11-0 and are now 2007
Texas Homeschool State Softball Champions"

Homeschoolers and the Bee

"What is it about home-schooled students that make
them such competitive spellers?
"Of the 286 students who will compete in the National
Spelling Bee next week, 36 are home schooled. While
only 3 percent of all students are homeschooled, they
typically make up 10 to 15 percent of contestants in
the national bee. And they love to win."

"Parental Guidance (from the Fairbanks Daily
News-Miner)
Simon Carlson received his high school diploma
Thursday night. Rather than being handed the
document by a school board representative or a
superintendent or even a principal, Carlson received
his diploma from his mom and dad, Nancy and Joe."

Greater Love Hath No Man...

"My 15-year-old son played in the Home School World
Series held in Pensacola, Florida, this past week.
Unfortunately, his team, the Dallas Angels, suffered a
heartbreaking eighth-inning loss in the semi-final
game to finish 3rd in the tournament. Culled from
regional tournaments, eight home school varsity
teams competed in Florida for the championship.
Begun in 2000, the Home School World Series boasts
an impressive alumnus. Many former players have
gone on to play at the collegiate level and some have
even gone on to play in the Majors. However, there is
one young man, in particular, who has risen above
them all: Ryan Adam Miller from Pearland, Texas, a
suburb of Houston.
"Ryan played in the 2004 Home School World Series
with the Houston Eagles. Unlike many former players,
Ryan was unable to continue his baseball career
because, on his 18th birthday, he entered the United
States Marine Corps..."

Letter to Southwest Texas Junior College

Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde has
changed its dual credit policy to exclude home
schoolers from reduced fees, while continuing to
allow public school students to pay less. Tim Lambert
reminded them of the state's policy toward home
schoolers and urged them to come into compliance
with it.
