A Relationship Forged in Steel
Early Fencing Lesson

Daniel Trapani
"Ever since I was little, my father and I have always been very close, and he has always been the person to whom I have gone for advice and instruction. My father inherited his love for the sport of fencing from his father, and in turn, he passed that passion on to me. My father fenced in high school and then, while he was in the army, he became the assistant coach at West Point. Following the army, he fenced at William Paterson College for four years, achieving many personal and team goals. However, after getting out of college, he hung up his equipment in the closet and did not touch it until I found it there when I was seven."

Greetings!

THSC Association is pleased to share the following articles, announcements, and news for your information and encouragement.

  • HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
  • Father and Child

One father is more than a thousand schoolmasters.
    George Herbert (1593-1633)

THSC would like to take this opportunity to recognize and honor home schooling fathers.

Many people would say that the home school movement is a women's movement, but we know that dads play a very big part in making it all happen. Some actually do the teaching; some help. Many support their school by going to work every day, so Mom can stay home. There are those who give their wives time off to clear their heads, and those who are great coaches and encouragers, on and off the field.

So, dads, for all you do, we thank you! Click on the graphic for poems about, and wisdom from, dads.

Held in the elegant and historical Hall of State at Fair Park in Dallas, the night of June 15, 2007, will bring to light the historical significance of Texans standing up for their rights. More than 75 parents were dragged before judges as they upheld their right to direct the education of their children; their stories, told in the documentary, are compelling and heart wrenching.

"I thought this was an important story to tell. These parents were sacrificing daily for their children's best interests, amidst a great deal of hostility," stated Laurel Wilson, an independent filmmaker from Dallas and producer of the documentary. "I was continually surprised that these parents were standing up against their own churches, the public school system, state officials, and, many times, their own families."

Many stars of the home school movement will be attending the Premiere, including Attorney Shelby Sharpe (lead attorney in the defining home school case in Texas), Judge Dave Haigler (federal administrative law judge in the Dallas region), Mary Maddoux (wife of the late radio personality Marlin Maddoux), and Barbara and Steve Short (first home school family to win in JP court in the 1980s).

The Premiere will be held on June 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hall of State at Fair Park. Call THSC toll free, 888-200-4903 to pre-register by Wednesday, June 13, or buy your tickets ($7) at the door. Registration will open at 6:30 p.m., and attendees are welcome to peruse the Great Hall and various other parts of the Hall of State Museum until theatre doors open at 7:15.

"Homeschoolers aren't immersed in a structured classroom setting amidst dozens of other students. Most of them don't even have credentialed teachers or state-approved curricula.

"But homeschoolers Evan O'Dorney and Caitlin Snaring don't feel deprived. In fact, their education at home has given them the freedom and passion to pursue the thing they love to do most...learn."
