Want to have a fun history class while teaching your children about some modern day history that directly impacts their lives?

After attending the premiere of the THSC documentary Taking a Stand: The Battle for Texas Home School Freedom, Anne Gebhart, with HEART of Texas, brainstormed with some ideas about what could be included in a unit study that would help her family "get the picture." She sent her thoughts to THSC and has graciously allowed us to share the fun with you.  There's nothing like a little role-playing to help our students understand what the home schooling pioneers went through and what a special privilege it is to home school in Texas!

Miracle in Texas is Attorney Shelby Sharpe's account of the events in the legal battle for homeschooling freedom in Texas. Mr. Sharpe was the lead attorney in the Leeper v. Arlington case, which defined home schooling law in Texas.

Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom is the new documentary describing the trials of the pioneers in the Texas home schooling movement in the 1980s-related by the participants. Together, these two DVDs provide a comprehensive look at where we started and how far we've come and remind us why THSC encourages home schoolers to keep a sharp eye on laws and activities affecting home schooling throughout the state.

Meet THSC Convention Keynote Speaker John Erickson!

johnericksonFor most of you, no introduction is needed for our return keynote speaker, John Erickson, better known as Hank the Cowdog!  Your entire family will want to attend the evening sessions with Hank, Friday and Saturday, August 17-18.

John R. Erickson, a former cowboy and ranch manager, is gifted with a storyteller's knack for spinning a yarn. Through the eyes of Hank the Cowdog, the smelly, smart- aleck Head of Ranch Security, Erickson gives readers a glimpse of daily life on a ranch in the West Texas Panhandle. This series of books and tapes is in libraries across the country, has sold more than 6 million copies, is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, and is the winner of the 1993 Audie for Outstanding Children's Series from the Audio Publisher's Association. Publishers Weekly calls Hank a "grassroots publishing phenomena," and USA Today says this is "the best family entertainment in years."  In addition, Erickson was awarded National Christian Schools Association's Lamplighter Award in 2004 for his novel Moonshiner's Gold.

Erickson was born in Midland, Texas. By the age of 3, he had moved with his family to Perryton, where he lives today with his wife, their youngest son, and a dog named Sophie, on their very own ranch. His advice to young writers is, "Write about something you know. Try to leave your readers better off than they were before."

In addition to being entertained, be inspired and encouraged with our other great lineup of speakers and exhibitors.  Come ready to shop for all your new school year needs in the carpeted Exhibit Hall.

Don't forget the children's and teen programs (space is limited).  Receive a discount for pre-registration until July 2, 2007.

Levelland ISD Officials Ignore Regulations

tim
An attendance officer and a principal from Levelland ISD tried to deny a parent the right to homeschool her children, despite clear directives from the state of Texas. Tim Lambert strongly warned the principal to adhere to state regulations or face legal liability.

A Night with the Stars!

A Night with the Stars!

documentarypremiere2

"The premiere of the documentary, Taking a Stand in Texas: The Battle for Home School Freedom, was held the night of June 15 in the elegant and historic Hall of State in Dallas, Texas.

"The film describes home school pioneers' battles, both in the courts and in the public arena, that ultimately led to legal victory and the freedom Texans now enjoy.  More than 75 parents were dragged before judges as they stood up for their right to direct the education of their children; their stories, told in the documentary, are compelling and heart wrenching. Kirk and Beverly McCord, documentary participants attending the premiere with their children, said, 'Our children also enjoyed the evening very much, and it meant a lot to them to see Mom and Dad and others that they knew recalling their home schooling experiences.'"

Get ready to say, "Happy Birthday, America!"
