Special Needs Addressed at Convention
THSC is excited to bring you the 2008 THSC State Convention & Family Conference on August 14-16 in The Woodlands! You won't want to miss out on a weekend packed with quality exhibitors and inspiring speakers. Joining our Keynote Speakers, Dr. Jeff Myers, Jessica Hulcy, John Erickson, and Doug and Patsy Arnold will bless attendees again this year.
Doug and Patsy Arnold are educators with a mission. Their middle child has been disabled since infancy. Through many experiences of God's grace as they have worked with their son, the Arnolds have learned much about working with children who have different learning needs. As a result, they have begun a ministry to families with special needs children called Texas' Special Kids. (Click on picture.) This year, the Arnolds will present the practical workshop, "Parents Are from Jupiter; Kids Are from Pluto." They will also facilitate a special fellowship on Saturday afternoon for families with special needs children.
Hotel Accommodations
Time is running out to receive a special rate at The Woodlands Waterway Marriott! There are still a very limited number of rooms in the block, but space is filling up quickly. Make reservations soon if you would like to stay onsite at the Convention hotel. Once the block is full, you can call back and check for cancellations and still get the discounted rate through July 23.

Rice Golfer Whitehead a Winner in the Making

Michael Whitehead, a Rice freshman from Sugarland, has had a great first season as a golfer. He played in all twelve tournaments the Owls entered and tied for 17th in the Conference USA Championship. He says being homeschooled made the transition to college simple, as he already knew how to manage his time and learn on his own. Home schooling also allowed him to schedule golf practice around the weather, allowing him to optimize his time.

Borger DPS Implements Own Policy
A member asked THSC Association to intervene after an officer with the Borger Department of Public Safety required her to provide information about her curriculum. The officer was also unprofessional in her treatment of the parent and her daughter. Tim Lambert wrote a letter to the department reminding the officer of the state of Texas' policy toward home schoolers who are applying for driver licenses.

Training Wheels
My kids are growing up. Despite all the chaos, chatter, and questionable choices in their young lives, I see they really are growing up. As I helped my wife prepare for a fall homeschool semester, I asked God how to adjust my teaching approach for our maturing student population. He faithfully showed me that I would do well to get out of the way and let Him do what He had planned to do all along. As usual, the Lord was very creative in getting my attention.
Wild patterns of purple and gray painted the solid bank of puffy clouds through which the sun peeked, fashioning islands of sunlight across the park meadows. I marveled at the spectacular Sunday afternoon sky while two precious daughters gleefully spun around the parking lot on mangled bicycles.
