An Encouraging Word: What Home Schooling Has Taught Me
Home schooling is not always only a matter of what
we teach our children. Parents often learn many
things as well—about themselves, their families,
priorities, and the subjects they teach. Mary James
will be a featured speaker at the 2006 THSC State
Convention & Family Conference. Enjoy her insights
on what she has learned as you read her article:
WHAT HOME SCHOOLING HAS TAUGHT ME
Mary James
In thirteen years of homeschooling, I have had the
joy of watching my children learn many wonderful
things. I have taught five children to read—starting
with letter sounds and leading all the way to chapter
books. I have watched addition and multiplication
facts being tackled over and over and seen the light
go on when fractions are mastered. When things are
not going so well and I feel like I am not
accomplishing enough, it is often very heartening to
think back over all of the things my children have
learned. Lately I have been feeling reflective in a
different way and have been mulling over some of
the things that I have learned during thirteen years
of home schooling.

State Board of Education’s Authority Under Attack

SBOE member Gail Lowe penned an article in which
she expressed concern about the elected body’s
authority being threatened by TEA appointments.
Why is this of interest to Texas home schoolers? As
the author explains, "...the support of grassroots
political activists is so important to the conservatives
on the SBOE. They understand the ongoing battle for
the minds of our children and the indoctrination that
often substitutes for knowledge-based education in
public schools. Without an elected body that
answers to its constituents and seeks to provide an
education that supports the mainstream values of
Texas families, there is no telling what outrageous
education fad or liberal agenda may be mandated in
the curriculum.”

For Home Schoolers, School Is Already In

In an article which is posted in the July 8, 2006,
edition of South Carolina’s TheState.com, Devon
Marrow tells about home schoolers who are not
concerned by state requirements. The ones he
reports on surpass the required number of school
days as they homeschool year-round. Excerpts of
the article follow:
“For some students, school’s already in
”While other Midlands high schoolers cherish the
quickly fading days of summer vacation, 14-year-old
Elise Porter is well into her sophomore year of high
school.
“Her schedule is packed with geometry, Spanish,
home economics, violin, honors English, world history,
swimming, chemistry, creative writing and speech
classes.
“For families involved in Forest Acres Christian
Educators, a local support group for home-schoolers,
learning doesn’t take a holiday.”
