Calling All Leaders!

THSC has just sent out a Leader E-Letter to all the leaders we have on our list. Are you a leader? Did you get your e-mail?
If not, we need to hear from you!
THSC has the daunting task of keeping up with the 400+ support groups in this vast state! We work very hard to keep a current list of support groups AND their leaders. We spend much time and effort doing this, and we ask you to help us with this project because:
1) We believe it is important for Texas home schoolers to stay connected.
2) We often have announcements and information that we want to get specifically to support group leaders
3) If you want people to know how to get in touch with your group, it is imperative that we have your group's correct information!
Besides, we have a special gift this year for all support group leaders who contact us and update their group's information!

But What About Socialization?
Schools take on bullying, which is starting earlier and lasting longer
by Michele Clock
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
July 9, 2007
"They shoved Bailey Thompson against a wall.
"They called the thin, brown-haired boy a nerd and a freak.
"After bullies threw sticks and pebbles at him, the 11-year-old told his mother he didn't want to go on.
"My son is telling me he wants to die, he can't take it anymore, nobody loves him,' said Tonya Thompson, 34, a stay-at-home mother in Santee. 'And that kills a parent to hear that."
"Thompson pulled her son out of Rio Seco School in Santee and now home-schools him...."

Let's Show Them Socialization!
"What about socialization?" New home schoolers are sometimes a bit puzzled when they ask that question, which has been repeatedly raised by so many others (grandparents, friends, teachers, etc.), and a knowing smile appears on the face of the seasoned home educator. Throughout the history of the modern home school movement, parents have found ways in which their children can experience socialization.
What is socialization? Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary says: the process by which a human being beginning at infancy acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of his society through his education and training for adult status.
We are asking Texas home schoolers to share pictures of their children in social situations for the November issue of the THSC REVEW magazine; its theme will be "What About Socialization?" We will be blessed to see and share the creative ways through which all of you parents squelch the myth that home schooled children will be social misfits.
E-mail your pictures to review@thsc.org along with a note giving us permission to use them. Pictures will need to be received by August 31. We'll use as many pictures as we can fit into the magazine. If they all won't fit, we'll post the rest on our Web site (sans names).
Help us prove the point!

In Memoriam - Dr. Raymond Moore
Dr. Raymond S. Moore passed away Friday, July 13, 2007, at the age of 91 after having suffered a massive stroke on Father's Day. Over the past several decades Dr. Raymond & Dorothy (deceased) Moore were known and loved as home schooling pioneers. Together they authored numerous books on home schooling. Raymond was a missionary, a world traveler, lecturer, author, educator, and a consummate gentleman. His highest goal was to serve God as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian. His family and friends knew him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, mentor, and friend.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Raymond S. & Dorothy N. Moore Memorial Scholarship Fund at Weimar Institute, Weimar, CA 95736.

Learning to Love Learning
I have believed for a long time that if you teach a child to read, to write, to work with numbers; train him in character; and give him a love of learning, he can then educate himself. Reading, writing, and working with numbers are the tools of learning. Character is also important, because a lazy child will not put out the effort to educate himself; a proud child will not see the need to seek further learning. The love of learning is necessary for the young person to be motivated.
After 14 years of home schooling, I awakened one day and realized that I had only two more years to go. I began to think back over my home schooling years and became discouraged when remembering all the things that I had wanted to teach my children. But wait! What was my philosophy? Oh, yes... read...write...work with numbers...character...the love of learning. My children are good readers, they are becoming good writers, and they can work with numbers. They are not perfect, but they exhibit godly character, by and large.
However, had I communicated the love of learning to them? How do you teach that to someone? When did I begin to love learning?
