You Be the Chemist Challenge
The You Be the Chemist Challenge is an academic competition, sponsored by the Chemical Education Foundation that engages students in learning and helps promote the science of chemistry, the benefits of chemicals, and the importance of chemical safety awareness in a fun and innovative medium. This competition's goal is to gather serious students interested in science and chemistry and encourage them to further challenge themselves with other students in a fun way. It does take discipline; however, as the study material will challenge the participants.
The challenge is open currently for all sixth, seventh, and eighth graders who have not yet reached the age of fifteen before the end of the 2008/2009 school year. The only expenses would be the printing of the study guide from www.chemed.org for round one or the qualifying competition and travel costs for the regional and state winners to meet at the testing venue for those levels of competition. In the local or qualifying round, the Chemical Education Foundation will furnish the actual written tests for students. The regional, state, and national levels are verbal competitions.
The competition starts with the school year in August. Once a state winner is found, that student and one chaperone are sent to the national competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with expenses paid by the Chemical Education Foundation. Along the way, winners receive U.S. savings bonds, trophies, and gift certificates to Discovery store.com.

Wayne Root Speaks Out on Home Schooling

Wayne Allyn Root, the Libertarian vice-presidential candidate, recently issued a press release addressing changes in regulation of home schoolers in Washington, D.C. He stated that the responsibility for educating children should rest with the parents, not the government, be it local, state, or federal.
Washington, D.C., recently implemented changes that increase government regulation over home schoolers. This is the first time in fifteen years that government control has been tightened anywhere in the United States. "Given the abysmal job performed by the District public schools, the D.C. government should be encouraging, not discouraging home schooling," says Root.

Teaching the Right-Brained Child
Remember those artsy/craftsy, musician kids in school? The other kids were told to just humor them in hopes that the artsy/craftsy kids would filter into society as they got older. Oh yeah, they dressed a little differently, often forgot their homework and lunch money, and acted a little weird, but if we smiled and encouraged them, perhaps they would come around when they reached their thirties! Why did they seem to be so "out of it" much of the time? With the explosion of brain research in the last ten years, particularly studying the way humans assimilate information and learn, we now know that the percentage of "weirdoes," the "out-of-touch" people is not 5 to 10%; they are 50% of the general population. That is right - half of our population learns in a right-brained way. If you have four children, statistically, two of them are right-brainers. The potential of this group of right-brain learners is amazing. Research tells us they are the visionaries, inventors, and the people who employ you and me in the workplace. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world have been right-brained! Winston Churchill, the Wright Brothers, Thomas Edison, "Magic" Johnson, Walt Disney, Theodore Roosevelt, and Benjamin Franklin are examples of right-brain greatness. We must make every effort to help kids like these learn to their fullest potential.
